Where is the Real World Workflow?

I was surprisingly underwhelmed by this book. I am normally a big fan of Jeff Schewe (see my Real World Camera RAW review for example) but this book really missed the mark for me. I really expected the same book layout presented in Real World Camera RAW, that is, a brief overview of the advantages of the proposed process, lots of in-depth examples to show the technical variations, and some additional "advanced" topics to help readers structure an improved process. Unfortunately, this book was plagued by a lack of focus and a theoretical approach that lacked substance.

The book seemed to get lost in esoteric and sometimes confusing examples that are often concluded with summary paragraphs with this basic theme of, "You could do it that way but it's not very good." I was left with the feeling that the authors included numerous examples and provided great detail just to debunk a specific technique. I don't really need 4 pages to get the point, simply recommend that we not use Sharpen or Edge Sharpen and be done with it.

My interest was in seeing examples of differing sharpening approaches and the advantages and disadvantages of each. There are a few examples like that in the book, but they are, unfortunately, few and far between. In fact, if you've read Real World Camera RAW, you've actually seen one of the examples already. Perhaps I had false hopes in a book about sharpening focusing primarily on examples. I have no interest in Continuous Tone printing, I do very little Creative Sharpening for the majority of my work, and I only rarely sharpen images for Offset Press. With only a portion of the book aimed at photographers using Camera RAW and an Inkjet Printer, this book seems to be misaligned with the majority of photographers out there with DSLRs and a desire to understand sharpening.

I really hope that the author retools this book for the third edition and simply goes after "Real World Sharpening in Camera RAW and Lightroom" and aims it towards the majority of photographers printing to inkjet printers. This approach would seem to have a much larger base of interested readers and would address the key concepts of sharpening as applied to a tangible workflow. As the book now stands, it's a theoretical approach short on examples that leaves this reader needing additional information.

Everything you need to know about sharpening a photo

Save for certain "special effects", sharpness, clarity and smooth tonal gradations are amongst the critical hallmarks of excellent photographs, and go to the heart of what distinguishes photography as an art form. If you never thought that anyone could fill over three hundred pages with technically essential information and instruction about sharpening photographs, think again because here it is, and it's really important for anyone who strives for excellence in their digital imaging work.

Much more than a cookbook on how to sharpen a photo (though it does that too), this book, now in its second and expanded edition, describes in a way that's easy to understand the very fundamentals of digital imaging technology and image structure which give rise to the need for a multi-stage and multi-purposed sharpening workflow; from there the authors go on to present in considerable detail the optimal techniques for implementing it, so that those of us who read from cover to cover will understand the basis of the techniques they recommend. Years of experience and experimentation are bundled into these techniques, so one can have every confidence that they work well - as I do from having used a fair number of them myself. The book should cater to a broad audience because it covers sharpening, smoothing and noise reduction using a number of applications including Lightroom, Camera Raw, Photoshop and several 3rd party applications. Because some of these techniques have elements of repetitive operation image after image, certain parts of the sharpening process can be automated to improve our workflow efficiency. Photoshop has a functionality called "Actions" which permit one to do this. Hence I really appreciated the authors' inclusion of step-by-step instructions for creating several such Actions, along with Chapter 6 which contains one of the most approcahable introductions to the creation, editing and use of Actions that I've seen in the Photoshop literature.

I own a substantial collection of books, videos and other reference materials on digital imaging, and I must rate this particular volume as one of the most valuable in my library. It is the most technically comprehensive and innovative resource I've ever seen covering sharpening, smoothing and noise reduction, all of which are vital to achieving excellence in the production of fine photographs. It is also very readable and well illustrated.

Oh - and more thing: "Hamish" plays a central role in this book, so if you'd like to find out all you want to know about "Hamish", you'll just have to get it :-)

No Longer Insecure

I consider myself a fairly competent user of Photoshop (PS), Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) which is a plug-in that comes installed in PS, and Lightroom (LR), but one area where I didn't feel post-processing in my bones was image sharpening, which is the process of adjusting images to both overcome the image softness inherent in digital photography and to make artistic adjustments. I'd read the first edition of this book, and understood the difference between capture, creative and output sharpening, but wasn't always sure what those sliders in Unsharp Mask were doing for me. Since that first edition, Adobe had improved the sharpening facilities in ACR and LR. It seemed like visiting the second edition was in order.

After explaining what sharpening is and why images need to be sharpened, Schewe, building on the work of the late Bruce Fraser, explains multipass sharpening and the somewhat different approaches taken by the main PS, ACR and LR software. The author then describes each of the tools available and their effects. He then shows the application of each of the tools to a digital workflow in each of the three softwares, and finishes up by showing how to speed up the processes by using actions and presets. Along the way, he also discuses digital noise and its reduction, an area that is intimately linked with sharpening.

This is not a subject for the photographer new to post processing. A description of the tools involved may be quite intimidating to the tyro, but ultimately every image processor has to face up to sharpening. Luckily, it seemed to me that Schewe had improved on previous explanations, and he incorporates several graphic techniques that make it clear. If the reader really wants an appreciation of the sharpening tools, create the test file presented in chapter 4 and follow along with the author on a computer. When I had finished the book this time I not only had a much better feel for sharpening but I also had several pleasant surprises.

As Schewe explains, capture and creative sharpening require the use of several different PS tools for effectiveness, and understanding what each does is important to understanding the process. But LR and ACR combine these processes and ultimately make capture sharpening much simpler. Similarly, output sharpening is much more cut and dried, with the sharpening to be applied a matter of factors, like original and final image size, all of which are virtually formulaic, and which my image processor of choice, LR, applies on the fly. Creative sharpening (if needed for artistic reasons) still requires an export to PS, but is much easier if one is not being confused by capture and output sharpening.

To test my knowledge and good luck, I reprocessed and printed several pictures from scratch (i.e., the RAW file). Following Schewe's guidance I was happier with each of these images than, or at least as happy as, I was with my old prints. I think I finally have a handle on sharpening.

About the Author
Martin L. Greenwald is a Professor in the Department of Art and Design at Montclair State University. He has written eight books on subjects ranging from graphic design to solar and alternative energy conversion. Professor Greenwald received his BS from New York University, his MS from the City College of New York, and his EdD from New York University.

John C. Luttropp is Chairperson of the Department of Art and Design at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey. He has been a graphic designer and educator for more than 20 years. Professor Luttropp received his MFA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University and his BFA in Sculpture from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.

If you Really Want to Become a Successful Trader you Need to Read This Book

If you have been trading live in the markets like me for years, you know that the primary battle is not between you and the markets but between you and your mind. Even if you have the necessary technical skills to read the market correctly and you know how to manage your money and your risk, it is very often your mind that sabotages your trading strategies and your trading plans.

I spend hours and hours to try to find the perfect setups and construct the right trading plan so that I have an edge in the market, but when I trade I often fail because of my thinking and my emotions. Often after making a mistake I promised myself that this would be the last time I had made that mistake, only to find out that I did exactly the same thing over and over again the next time. It seemed to me that the harder I tried to avoid to make these mistakes, the more I made them. Finally after many losing trades I became fearful of trading although I knew my setups and trading plans were sound.

I have been trying to control my emotions and my thoughts for many years. I have read many books on the subject. I listened to cd's trying to change my thoughts but never I read or heard that controlling my emotions in trading is the wrong thing to do.

If you struggle with the same issues like me, you will find this book like I did a real eye opener. After reading Dr. Gary Dayton's book I found new hope that I really can be successful in trading.
First, the book explains clearly the culprits in our thinking and why we have strong emotions in trading. It clarifies what works and what does not work when we try to change our behavior.
Next, it teaches us the importance of practicing mindfulness to overcome these challenges.
Finally, it gives an excellent trading process framework to improve our trading performance.

This book is easy to read, it is practical with a lot of exercises and I can say that thanks to this book I found my edge to be successful in trading.

A Revolutionary Book on Trading Psychology

This is the best book on an extraordinarily important topic - trader's psychology. In common with many professions, traders face formidable challenges in two key areas - thinking (mind) and action (performance that produces measurable results). Most traders know that long-term success in trading can only be built on solid foundations of 3 M - Method, Money and Mind. While vast majority of the books in this area address the first two M's - Methods (trading methods and strategies) and Money (position sizing and risk management) - very few books have attempted to examine the subject of the third M - trader's mind - based on solid science. Applying the rigorous standards of scientific inquiry to study the working of any mind, let alone a trader's mind, was an immensely difficult task until recently. Two major developments have radically changed this situation -- emergence of technologies that can image the brain in real time (one example: functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging - f MRI) and methodologically robust studies in neurocognitive sciences. Dr. Dayton's book succeeds brilliantly in:

1) Comprehensively surveying the vast and rapidly changing areas of science that are important to traders
2) Identify and highlight the significance of the key studies that are critically important for understanding of our minds
3) The practical application of this new found knowledge in real world trading with clear examples

Translating the latest findings from cutting edge science to the immensely challenging and probabilistic world of trading is not a goal that can be achieved easily. Dr. Dayton brings to bear in this book his considerable experience in clinical psychology and trading the real markets (for a living) to achieve this goal.

In solving real life problems success often depends on asking the right questions because they guide our fickle and bias prone minds in the right direction and to the right evidence. Right questions ultimately lead us to the right answers that endure in the real world of practical living. Part 1 of this book embodies this principle by defining the key problems facing our minds - biases, blind spots, pitfalls in commonly used thinking patterns and tricks, strong emotions, particularly fear - and the way they affect our thinking and actions.

In Part 2, Dr. Dayton discusses extensively the concept of using the concrete ideas and rigorously tested strategies and extremely useful practical tools to eliminate the key problems discussed in Part 1. He focuses intensely on one particular practice that has been the subject of hundreds of scientific studies - mindfulness. Not only does Dr. Dayton discusses the hard science behind the practice of mindfulness, he provides the needed tools to the reader who is interested in starting his / her own daily practice of mindfulness. These tools - mp3 audio files for guided mindfulness meditation - can be downloaded from his web site free of charge.

Part 3 of the book highlights the importance of effective action / execution and the psychological processes that a trader can use to reach the goal of exceptional trading performance. I found the chapters in this section to be very clear and concrete in defining the pathway to excellence in trading. Worth the read

I have to admit that I was skeptical of several of the reviews before mine. This is a new book, and many of the reviewers only had one review; this book. I was nearly finished with Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow, and I was excited to see that there was a field of psychology called Behavioral Finance (the emotions and thought processes of how we interact with financial decisions and other decision making). Sadly, the author of Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow had no clinical studies on Traders, so I was about to try to translate his research into something worth while for traders, thankfully I found this book just in time! Dr. Gary saved me a lot of work!

I think this may be the best trading psychology / trading book I've ever read. That complement is not meant to take anything away from other great authors such as: Van Tharp, Williams, Douglas or J. Rande Howell, this book complements all of their work. The author pulls together material from many different authors and scientific sources, and puts it together in a very comprehensive format. I like that Dr. Gary appreciates the wisdom and experience of trading psychologists that have gone before him, freely giving credit to his sources and case studies so readers know where to look for additional information. Lots of other trading books try to teach you something new, or to educate in one way or another. This book helps to make sense of the entire trading process as seen through our emotions, and teaches how to accept your emotions for the fleeting things that they are, but not get trapped by them.

I also highly recommend The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters. It is not a trading book, but it clearly describes how we are emotional animals, and that the instinctual emotions programmed into our DNA may be beneficial for our survival as individuals and a society, (but if you read between the lines), you will see these same base instincts are responsible for creating self sabotage patterns in all different areas of our lives, and are also responsible for trading disasters as well. Observing and reconditioning our thoughts is the key difference between an average life of struggle, and a life of purposeful achievement with reduced frustration (dare I say joy?). When I read both books during the same time period, my understanding of the mind was greatly expanded.

Great Book for Consultants

I work in a consulting role and was looking for a book to help improve my client interviews. There are several books out there that give you ideas about questions to ask but this book gives you a roadmap for developing good questions. It adds the element of strategy.

If you like this book, you should also take a look at John Sawatsky (you'll have to google him, he hasn't written any books). He's done a lot of research on interviewing and the best ways to formulate questions. His work nicely compliments this book.

Yes, the title is misleading...but WOW, amazing book.

Whether you are in sales or not, you must buy this book. I can see how some would be disappointed, because I also thought it would be more of a book on how to detect lies and read people, and it's not. Even thought the title is misleading, it offers information that you MUST have if you intend on reading any other body language or lie detecting type book. It's a necessarily complimentary book. The things you learn will help you in all aspects of life.

The best book on asking questions out there. When utilized properly it will make a huge impact personally and professionally.

This book is extremely useful for anyone in any field. The act of asking questions is so integral in order to perform to the highest level possible. A lot of people stress the importance of listening--as does this book. However, in order to better guarantee that what you are listening to is useful information, you need to make sure you ask the right questions first.

This book talks about asking questions and listening to the answers. It touches upon--and recommends books for--the various sub-specialities you will encounter in the interrogation world. With the way this book is written, it proves useful for anyone in any field. For interrogation it really serves as a primer that introduces you to the basics. It also talks about how these basics (asking good questions, listening, note-taking, etc) are the bread and butter in the interrogation world. They work so well it can be used in several facets of life--personal, professional, Law enforcement, etc.

Fortunately, I bought this book in order to make my questioning methods more effective at work and beyond. So I was not mislead by the title, but I can see how some may feel mislead. This book really is about the meat and potatoes of interrogation. It broadly defines most of what you would use every day in the interrogation world, and it applies these broad definitions to other subjects most people can apply it to.

What this book does NOT go into are the finer points of interrogation in different scenarios that are more advanced. For example, this book assumes the subject is neutral or positive about answering questions. It does not really teach you how to make people more cooperative--although it does prime you for that and gives you sources to pursue further. Additionally, while it touches upon deception detection and body language, it is not meant to teach you the in-depth methods of either.

Pros:
*Very useful content for any person
*Very good examples that are easy to relate to
*Immediately applicable in personal and professional life

Cons:
*Title is a bit misleading for someone who does not dig a little deeper to see what the book is about (-1/4 of a star)

Additional Considerations:
How to Spot a Liar is a book that is mentioned a lot in this book. With how much it is mentioned I feel as though it would be useful to read the two books in tandem. I plan on reading the book next so I can understand the content in this book even better.

I really hope Pyle writes more books. Especially ones that go deeper into more advanced interrogation. I would love to see digital content included showing interviews.
