Reliquaries, one of the central art forms of the Middle Ages, have recently been the object of much interest among historians and artists. Until now, however, they have had no treatment in English that considers their history, origins and place within religious practice, or above all, their beauty and aesthetic value. In Strange Beauty, Cynthia Hahn treats issues that cut across the class of medieval reliquaries as a whole. She is particularly concerned with portable reliquaries that often contained tiny relic fragments, which purportedly allowed saints to actively exercise power in the world.

Above all, Hahn argues, reliquaries are a form of representation. They rarely simply depict what they contain; rather, they prepare the viewer for the appropriate reception of their precious contents and establish the “story” of the relics. They are based on forms originating in the Bible, especially the cross and the Ark of the Covenant, but find ways to renew the vision of such forms. They engage the viewer in many ways that are perhaps best described as persuasive or “rhetorical,” and Hahn uses literary terminology—sign, metaphor, and simile—to discuss their operation. At the same time they make use of unexpected shapes—the purse, the arm or foot, or disembodied heads—to create striking effects and emphatically suggest the presence of the saint.

This is NOT a coffee table picture book,but an in-depth study of the art, psychology and manufacture of reliquaries and the meanings behind them. Excellent treatise, but is more for the intellectual and student than for casual entertainment.

About the Author

Daniel T. Larose earned his PhD in Statistics at the University of Connecticut. He is Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Director of the Data Mining programs at Central Connecticut State University.� His consulting clients have included Microsoft, Forbes Magazine, the CIT Group, KPMG International, Computer Associates, and Deloitte, Inc. This is Larose’s fourth book for Wiley.

Chantal D. Larose is a PhD candidate in Statistics at the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on the imputation of missing data and model-based clustering. She has taught undergraduate statistics since 2011, and has done statistical consulting for DataMiningConsultant.com, LLC.

Excellent Walkthrough Introduction to Data Science/Data Mining

What a great introduction to Data Science! I just completed my undergrad in Applied Mathematics and am beginning a graduate degree in Data Mining. I bought this book because it is necessary for my program. I am surprised at how much I enjoy reading this book. First of all, it is written in a way that informs while not overwhelming. There are plenty of examples and graphics throughout the book that add up to make for a walkthrough more than a talking to. I also like that Dr. Larose is a Statistician. He offers insights that can only be gained from understanding the underlying mathematics behind Data Science. I find that as I read through it, and I work through the R exercises and the Hands On Data exercises, I am becoming more confident and optimistic about my future as a Data Scientist. Of course, further study is necessary, but Discovering Knowledge in Data:... is an excellent beginning.

Charlotte, a high bred women from the country, is willing to do whatever must be done to give her three younger sisters the chances that she never had, and by anything she means anything; even selling herself as a mistress and doing all that it takes to please the man who purchases her. What Charlotte doesn't expect is for a man like Lucas Morgan to want her, especially at the high price he paid for her. She is willing to give everything she has to make him happy, but in giving herself away she may just get the heart of Mr. Morgan? Will Charlotte know what to do with his heart if he is willing to give it away?

Lucas, lost twin of the Earl of Westhunt, is on the prowl for a mistress. Specifically, one that his twin had once had his eye on. But the woman Lucas buys is nothing like what he is expecting. But will the hunt for his brother's killer lead these two down a path that can't be unwalked? And if Lucas falls for Charlotte, can she learn to love him or will he lose her to the next highest bidder?

This was a wonderful tale that showed the underbelly of high society, all the corrupt natures of the ton while still showing that love can survive even the worst of circumstances. Lucas and Charlotte's story was wonderful because of the story line itself, not only the suspense but the unexpected blossoming of feelings that happens between the main characters.

As a reader, I would love for Ms. Silver to work this story into a series. The characters were so great to "meet" and interact with and I'd love to read more about Charlotte, Lucas and Charlotte's three sisters. Author Lynne Silver spun a wonderful story and anyone who picks up this book will not be disappointed. She will definitely be on my list of authors to read in the future!

Mystery, suspense, and romance - My kind of book!

You might think upon starting this book that Charlotte is all innocent and unassuming, but she really knows what she’s doing. It was loyal of her to think of her sisters and to put herself in a situation that could easily spell disaster. I liked that she was determined to “sell” herself – her innocence, her virtue, and her life, basically – just so her sisters could have a better life. It was sort of funny that the entire time she was on stage, being ogled by all these strangers, that she had a running diatribe in her mind of various things, like smiling, what she could do if she felt faint, the doubts she had of whether or not the curtains would hold her up – which she doubted. Morgan was awesome. He had a purpose and was trying to be all selfless and noble. Unfortunately, since Charlotte had other plans, his purpose was immediately thrown out the window. I loved how instead of being all crying and fitful, Charlotte takes charge and decides this is going to work, and doesn’t take no for an answer.

In fact, that’s the one thing that runs throughout the entire book. Charlotte doesn’t take no for an answer. She is strong, she will do this, and you are going to do this with her. Period. Even when it turns out that there is a reason why Morgan hates his brother, Charlotte wants to help him figure out exactly what happened while he was gone.

Also, it was a nice surprise that the author, Lynne Silver, lets the book take a turn into a mystery, suspense, and romance. It was a great book full of humor, romance, and mystery. My kind of book.

Couldn't finish this...

I have no idea what book the reviewer above me read - but it could not have been this one... Admittedly, I couldn't actually finish this book, so I guess a review of the complete story would not be in my grasp, I can however guess the completely ridiculous and unrealistic ending that this would result in... so I don't feel too cheted out - except for the money I spent buying the kindle book...

The writing is appalling, but so is the story, so I guess those two go together. The premise of the story is that faced with the fact that an unknown cousin has inherited her estate our destitute heroine decides to sell herself as a whore in order to finance her younger sisters season - how she proposes that her sister would ever be able to be seen in company after she sells herself, the author chooses to skirt over by giving her a "stage name" as a whore - that way apparently no one will ever know!

Our hero has been away from England for 7 years, but is now back to investigate the murder of his older brother... He comes complete with an evil identical twin, which he believes murdered the older brother in question. In order to save our heroine from the dastardly deeds of said evil twin, he purchases our virginal whore of a heroine in front of his brother...

He then tries to get rid of her - having no need or wish for a mistress. She manages to charm herself in to his good graces with a bit of well-timed "oral attention" in his carriage... and he takes her home... after this the story just gets worse... He tries to solve his brothers murder, she tries to have sex with him, to make sure she gets paid and so forth... presumably they fall in love and end up getting married? I wouldn't know, I was bored to tears before I got half way through the book and had to stop...

This novel seems to have a problem identifying what it wants to be... Is it an erotic novel or a romance? It fails on both accounts. The sex is bland and vanilla and poorly written. And if it is a love story, it has such a ridiculous and unrealistic feel to it, that it it totally unbelievable...

Don't buy it.

Not very clear.

This book would have been better had it had english translations as well as the spanish words. It is hard to teach your children another language when you dont speak it yourself and cant understand half the book.

Practical and Political Guide to Staying Healthy

From the political to the practical, this straight-talk guide by conservative talk show host and epidemiology/nutrition guru, Dr. Michael Savage, PhD., gives us a nice summary of the many fails of today's public health and NIH services, magnified by the porous U.S. border policy of Barack Obama. That's just getting started. From there, Dr. Savage hones in on more immediate health advice with detailed chapters on nutritional and preventative aspects of protecting and bolstering your immune system, selecting the proper foods, and common sense approaches from washing your hands properly to choosing the right supplements and vitamins. (I chose a different toothpaste, for example, after reading this eBook.) I think your family and loved ones would benefit from the knowledge Savage clearly compiles here and it is not a burdensome read, but quite reader friendly. This being a Kindle product, it is helpful that there are hyperlink references within the book that will take you to Internet sources for additional study. Professionally done, as is everything Michael Savage puts his hand to.

Great Fun for the Whole Family

I bought this book on a whim. My mother was a math teacher and my childhood was filled with playing with math puzzles and games. When I saw this book, I decided to purchase it for my 8 and 9 year old kids. We all had a ball sitting around the coffee table and trying to make all the shapes! It has turned into a quick "rainy-day" sure-fire kid-pleasing activity. After a couple of weeks, I took it to my office and sat it on a side table at work. It was amazing to see grown men fascinated with trying to fit the pentomino pieces into different shapes. Buy it for the kids, but realize the adults will get just as much fun out of it! My only negative comment is that I could not figure out how to get the Pentominos out of the clear container. After a few frustrating minutes of not trying to tear the box, I figured it out.

Pentominoes puzzles need to be the size of the pieces

I bought this for my daughter in the hopes that she would be able to work on pentominoes and get better and better at it. There are 2 major problems with this book. 1) The puzzles are just small pictures, so she has to try and do it without working inside a puzzle, which makes it way more difficult. 2) The puzzles are all extremely advanced, there are no simple puzzles, they all use 11 or 12 pieces. I was hoping that it would gradulatelly get harder and harder. Too bad.

This was a great book to use to get my students interested in pentominoes. They had a lot of fun trying to create the figures. My only wish is that the pictures of the figures would have been a little bigger.

About the Author
Michael Levin has over 30 years of experience in the field of pharmaceutical scale-up, instrumentation and process optimization. He has edited a “Pharmaceutical Process Scale-Up” book, and has contributed chapters on “Tablet Press Instrumentation” and “Wet Granulation: End-Point Determination and Scale-Up” in the Encyclopedia of Pharmaceutical Technology. Michael holds a M.Sc. degree in History and Philosophy of Science from Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Ph.D. in BioMathematics (1980) from University of Washington in Seattle. His Post Doctorate studies were at University of Houston, Department of Mechanical Engineering. He participated in numerous wet and dry granulation and tableting projects in major pharmaceutical companies as a provider of process analytical instrumentation, conducted many seminars, performed numerous consulting services and wrote expert reports to clients in the pharmaceutical industry.
