Everything is fine. The book condition is the same as expected which is a brand new paperback Indian Edition. While the paperback indian edition is not the best option in quality, but for me its comparable and satisfied based on the price range. This book for Holberg & Allen was one of the basic books I used to study in depth the different topics of CMOS analog circuit design. The book level is moderate for me, which could be in the middle between other beginner-level books advanced-level like Razavi book.

Would have given 5 stars to the book.....but the international edition doesn't contain the 2 chapters i.e Switched Capacitor Circuits and DAC/ADCs. The Hardcover version has these 2 chapters though. Really bummed about this.

About the Author
Mark Rippetoe is the author of Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, Practical Programming for Strength Training 2nd edition, Strong Enough?, Mean Ol' Mr. Gravity, and numerous journal, magazine and internet articles. He has worked in the fitness industry since 1978, and has been the owner of the Wichita Falls Athletic Club since 1984. He graduated from Midwestern State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in geology and a minor in anthropology. He was in the first group certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a CSCS in 1985, and the first to formally relinquish that credential in 2009. Rip was a competitive powerlifter for ten years, and has coached many lifters and athletes, and many thousands of people interested in improving their strength and performance. He conducts seminars on this method of barbell training around the country.

The Lost Art of the Barbell

I'd recommend this book for just about everybody who lifts weights. Beginners can greatly benefit from it to learn good form right off the bat. Experienced lifters might also want to check it out because, a) there's always more to learn, and b) your form might not be as good as you think it is.

So what's the book about anyway? Well, the Cliff Notes version is that its a book on how to lift weights PROPERLY using a barbell. A few details:

-the book spends a lot of time discussing the details of all the basic barbell exercises, such as the squat, the bench press, the deadlift, the press, and the power clean. As you might have guessed, the book devotes a whole chapter to each movement. For instance, the squat is discussed on pages 8-63, while the bench press is discussed on pages 66-102- I give you the page numbers to show you how in depth the book goes into each exercise

-you'll learn a lot of details that are often times neglected, such as grip, and the placement of other body parts that are indirectly used during an exercise. As an example, the book spends about 4 pages discussing foot placement during the bench press exercise.

-the book is filled with pictures and diagrams. In fact its hard to find a page that doesn't have one picture or diagram on it.

-the book does also cover "useful assistance exercies" as well, such as chin-ups, dips, rows, barbell curls, etc.

The book ends with a nice section that talks about a lot of "miscellaneous" things, things such as the order of doing exercises, warm-up sets, nutrition, soreness and injuries, etc. As you can see, this is a pretty detailed and comprehensive book, a book I think all weight lifters, beginners and experienced, will get a lot out of. The best book ever written on strength training.

I've been championing this book for years now and my feelings haven't changed - this is THE book for strength training. I received a copy of the 3rd edition a couple of weeks ago and am in the process of re-reading the book. Not only is the book clear and logical but it is entertaining. This is the book you should buy your kids when they want to start lifting. This is the book you get your husband when he realizes he is way too fat. This is the book you buy yourself when you are done conforming to the ridiculous fitness trends of circuit-circus training and trendy chrome gyms.

This is the book that you buy when you want results.

Very detailed book, but with its shortcomings, as well

There is a lot to say about this book. Some will love it, and others will be bewildered by it. Hopefully this review will enable you to make a more informed decision before buying it.

Pros:
* The author has a very fine grasp on anatomy, and when he explains the lifts, he goes into great detail in his explanations to tell you why you should lift in one way vs. another. For instance, he advocates arching your back hard when performing a bench press to increase the angle of the attack of the pecs. Likewise, he spends a GREAT deal of time explaining that the arms should NOT hang plumb in a deadlift, since, if the shoulders are forward of the bar, this enables the traps to be perpendicular to the humerus and maximize the force of their isometric contraction. You need not be concerned with these particular details while reading this review, but be aware that Rippetoe will spend considerable amount of time talking about them.

* Rippetoe is extremely thorough. He talks in great length about every aspect of the lifts, including stance, breathing, grip, neck position, and so forth. Each small aspect of the lift is expanded in great detail, with large discussions about why altering that aspect might adversely affect the lifting efficiency or safety.

Cons:
* There are not enough illustrations to adequately demonstrate all the body parts and their relationships that Rippetoe speaks about in the text. There are many *photos*, but you need *illustrations* for the muscles and ligaments. For instance, I have several times read the section on shoulder impingement in the chapter on the bench press, but the one or two illustrations do not, in my opinion, adequately demonstrate this. You may say, "Yeah, but who cares? I just want to know that there is a problem of shoulder impingement," but if that's the case, you do NOT need the extremely lengthy explanations in this book or most of the illustrations in the first place. In other words, this book would be overkill for you.

* Rippetoe is often thorough to the point of beating a dead horse. As an example, he spends no less than a full page of text telling you that you should never bench press with a thumbless grip, when he could have condensed all of that text to, "Never bench press with a thumbless grip. IN ALL CASES, for your safety and maximal strength, wrap your thumb around the bar." If he really felt that he needed to support his case, he could have expanded the text to a paragraph, perhaps, but the amount of text for this one point is really enormous.

* It's unnecessary to caption a drawing of a guy using plate rebound to deadlift with, "If you do this, you're a p---y." When you talk or write like that, you sound like a meathead. Rippetoe is quite knowledgeable, so I won't label him a meathead, but he flirts with the title when he goes overboard when doing things like that.

* While Rippetoe explains many things, there are certain subtleties that are not addressed. For instance, he makes it very clear that the point of weightlifting is not to be big and pretty but rather to become functionally strong, and this is one of the reasons why you do not use plate rebound when training for the deadlift; the point of doing the exercise is to get stronger, not to cheat yourself out of work that makes you stronger. But if that's the case, why do we use the viscoelastic stretch and bounce at the bottom of a squat? Wouldn't a "true" squat be done from dead stop at the bottom, like one might have to do if loaded in real life from a squatting position? After all, in real life, when does one load himself, dip, and then come up? Another example of a lack of explanation would be why one arches during a bench press. Yes, there's a better mechanical advantage, but you're also shortening the range of motion--generally a cardinal sin in Rippetoe's book, because you're "cheating." If we don't believe in shortening the range of motion in other exercises, why is it acceptable in the bench press? In real life, if I had to lift something (say, in the event that I was stuck under something), perhaps I wouldn't be able to arch my back, so don't I want to train for real life, as in the deadlift and other lifts?

All in all, I enjoy this book, but I think it's important for people to get more than the glowing reviews that people always give Rippetoe. I am not a personal trainer, but I regularly lift, and I use Wendler's 5/3/1 system for my programming.

Nicely written intro to linguistics

The book has a nice arrangement of topics starting with some of the historical roots of linguistics and the sub-fields of study before getting into the core topic. The reader should be aware that this book is written as a textbook for an Indian university course of study and incorporates Sanskrit as well as English into many of the examples.

A good place to start at a reasonable price

A textbook from India which provides a nice taxomony of the various ways to look at language. Basically in an outline form and examines aspects of language, including a discussion of what exactly (and it's not exact) language is and how linguistics views it. From there it outlines basic concepts and definitions, approaches, and the variations of a language. This is followed by a study on grammar and finally a study of semantics. The book is a good source of the ideas and terminology of linguistics and useful as a basis for further reading in this area.

Euclid Seeram is a full time Faculty member of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and teaches in the Medical Radiography Diploma Program. In addition he is the Program Head and Teaching Faculty for the Bachelor of Technology Degree Program in Medical Imaging. Euclid has published over 35 papers in professional radiologic technology journals and has had 16 textbooks published to date. Topics of these books include: CT, Computers in Radiology, Radiographic Instrumentation, Digital Radiography, and Radiation Protection. Euclid has co-authored a book on Digital X-Ray Imaging (in press) with Drs Patrick Brennan and Mark McEntee of University College Dublin. Currently he serves on several Medical Imaging Editorial Boards, including the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences; Radiography, an International Journal of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Therapy; Biomedical Imaging and Intervention Journal based in Malaysia. Additionally he serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Allied Health. In February 2009 he was invited to serve as Editor-in-Chief for Radiography for e-Health Professionals, a new on-line Journal dedicated to all healthcare professionals. In 2000 Euclid was awarded the Fellowship from the CAMRT; an honor bestowed upon highly regarded professionals who have demonstrated an uncommonly high degree of competence and personal commitment to their profession. His current research interests are related to radiation dose in CT, and radiation dose optimization in computed radiography systems.

Not The Highest Quality Binding

This Book Had All The Basics I Needed To Follow Along In Class. However, I Was Disappointed Because The Binding Started Falling Apart Like The Glue Wasn't Strong Enough To Withstand Someone Turning The Pages So, They Would Randomly Fall Out. Not The Best Quality.

This tidy kid-friendly book has 122 pages crammed with activities and information on chemistry as well as support material in each chapter focused onWords to Know, Did You Know? and What's Happening? as well as a brief list of Supplies and boldly numbered steps of how to do each project. There are 10 chapters: Atoms, Mixtures, Reactions, Acids/Bases, Solids, Liquids, Gases, Change of State, Polymers, Water as well as a glossary, index, extensive list of websites, and book resources. Most projects are safe enough for kids to do without too much adult supervision, and there is a great deal of information packed into this volume. The illustrations don't have kids in them, so it could even be used with adults. A very nicely done and reasonably priced collection.

Too basic

This book was VERY basic. I bought it because I was teaching a chemistry class to 5th and 6th graders at a summer camp. I wanted to do a morning on Kitchen Chemistry but this book did not provide me with any good ideas. All of the labs they present are extremely simple and you could very easily find better ones for free on the internet.

Great home science book

Kitchen Chemistry is a terrific book of science activities. (Shhh! Don't call them "experiments"! That's a scary word.) I did most of them myself, as well as others, while I researched my own science activity books. Some books of science activities promise simple projects and realiable reactions, but this one really does deliver. And, as with all of Nomad Press's books, the text is well written, enlived with factual stories, and appropriate for the age group.

The Koran tells us that "Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other." In Women and the Koran: The Status of Women in Islam, Anwar Hekmat tells us of the brutality inflicted on women in the Islam religion in the name of God. Hekmat clearly outlines all the basic rights given to men through Mohammed and The Koran, which include: the right to multiple wives and concubines; the right to beat and rape one's wife if she refuses to submit to sex; the right to terminate a marriage at any time without legal process; the right to all children and property from the marriage if divorced; the right to bring one's wife to court for suspected adultery; and, if she is found guilty, the right to bury her in the ground up to her waist and stone here to death (as was done in at least four cases in Iran in the last seven years). These same rights do not extend to women in regards to their husbands. Hekmat argues that the Muslim religion created by Mohammed is a barbaric tradition, created more to bring glory to God. His argument is compelling. Hekmat paints a picture of Mohammed as a cruel dictator who orchestrated horrific purges on his enemies, and captured many of the women to be used as wives (of which he had 15) or concubines for his own pleasure. Mohammed is also depicted with insatiable sexual appetites that knew little boundaries, including that of age. His favorite wife was nine when they married, and he brought her toys to the bed on their wedding night. Much of the Islamic religion, claims Hekmat, is clever propaganda simply created to allow Mohammed to do as he pleased. Indeed, Hekmat argues as strongly against the entire Islamic religion as he does against the disparity against women. The book is well researched and clearly organized, and while the language becomes awkward in spots, it is still a good read. His thesis is that the Muslim religion's treatment of women should be re-thought and quickly. This book helps remind us that equality is a matter of perspective, and lends itself to shaping your perception of women's equality in the eyes of religion in a whole new way. -- From Independent Publisher

You must counter the facts

Those who disparage this book say that to criticise Islam is blasphemous -- that doesn't counter the facts that the author offered about the origins of this religion. Those who repeat the claim that Islam freed women, likewise, didn't counter his facts that show that the cultures previous to Islam offered more freedom for women, and the adoption of this religion inhibited those freedoms. Some say that women are equal to men in Islam, which ignores the suras that the author provides which contradicts the claim. Most importantly, some attack the book by showing the depravity of the West -- that is a non sequitor.

The question is: Is Islam true? Did God/Allah reveal himself to Mohammed? The author clearly shows that the foundations of the faith were a conglomerate of Judeao-Christian ideas mixed with the cultural and religious antecedents of the area. More damning, the author shows how Islam unfolded conveniently to support the private aims of the prophet, even contradicting itself from one sura to the next, and implicating "Allah" in deceit and depravity.

If Islam is a sham, which the author convincingly reveals, then how people interpret today is irrelevant. How can any culture found its precepts on a book that is not divinely inspired? Surely the West has its problems, but hiding from them by keeping women under lock and key is barbaric. All civilisation will prosper when men and women each pursue virtue and responsible behaviour, respect each other and share their collaborative gifts with society.

recommend w/ reservations

Interesting, but I question the scholarship to a degree. It is difficult to find an unbiased reflection on women,on Islam, and esp. on the Prophet and the wars of conquest. This is no exception, but I would agree that the pre-Islamic civ. appears to have had more freedoms for women- a public life, dress that expressed individuality , etc. still the man had ownership of his family and could kill unwanted children. ie, like most things- change makes some things better, some things worse. More freedoms doesn't necessarily translate into more rights.
I don't doubt as victors write the history, tribal genocides were carried out but are whitewashed as in all sacred religious history (note judeo-xtn OT wars of the Israelites against those living in land 'God gave to them') Its simply difficult to find texts that can examine M. & Islam without either vilifying or treating as sacred- a believer who can call the Prophet a human who made mistakes.

Appalling, but accurate.

The movie critic Michael Medved once described himself as a "glorified sewer inspector," and that is surely what Anwar Hekmat (not Helmat, despite what it says above) is. Anyone who undertakes to explore Muhammad's marriage to a 9-year-old girl, his copulation with her in a room filled with her dolls, his marriage to at least 11 (and possibly as many as 20) other women, and his other activities relating to women also has spent some time in the historical sewer.
This book details the entire repressive sexual regime of the traditional Muslim societies, including Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E., and Pakistan. (The author didn't get to describe the barabarians currently in control of Afghanistan, because they were not yet in power when the book was finished in 1996.) It's astounding, yet accurate: I know an American woman who went to visit a sheik in Iraq in the 1980s and was followed around by pebble-throwing boys because she wasn't wearing the traditional Muslim covering. No one disciplined the boys, because it was she who was in the "wrong": she had dared to show her female head in public!
Marrying 9-year-olds, it seems, became a tradition with the caliphs (heads of Islam) after Muhammad, and the author shows that child brides are still favored in much of the Muslim world today. It must be okay, because the "Prophet" did it!
The most useful part of this book, perhaps, is the extensive treatment of the historical background of the sections of the Koran and the hadiths dealing with women. While Islam says they came to Muhammad from God (whom Muslims, following pagan Arabs before Muhammad's day, call "Allah"), it seems that many are direct copies of provisions of Babylonian, Assyrian, and other Middle Eastern law with which Muhammad was familiar.
It was only Muhammad, though, who invented the idea that it was acceptable for his warriors to take as many of the women they captured in war as sex slaves as they wanted to. His exploits in this regard were truly stunning -- and the civil war in Sudan still features the taking of (in this case, Christian and animist) sex slaves today!
If you don't think Islam is a gutter religion, an evil imposition from the bedouins of 7th-century Arabia, read this book. It'll show you the truth. [I also recommend reading the Koran and Ibn Warraq's _Why I Am Not A Muslim_, which both provide plenty of evidence that God has nothing to do with Islam and that the Iranians' treatment of women today is consistent with Muslim governments' behavior ever since Muhammad -- if Iran isn't actually more lenient!]
