A great read. Very easy to get into

A great read. Very easy to get into. The only thing is that some Special Ed. laws have changed since it was published and it might not be completely up to date. A lot of very good information in Chapter 5, not just about Special Education, but teaching anything in general.

Brilliant

When Grace's daughter Lotte walks onto the street in front of a car she's being saved by Melody. Melody has a son, Skip, who's Lotte's age. Because she's so relieved Grace invites both Melody and the driver of the car, Eddy, for dinner. Grace and her husband are both hardworking people who don't like their jobs, but they are slaving away to be able to afford their mortgage. Melody is a hippy, a single mother who has just left a community. Eddy's a risk analyst who only has one goal in life and that is to marry his girlfriend Romy. She's unfaithful to him and isn't very keen. Because of the accident the paths of Grace, Melody and Eddy cross and then things start evolving and there's no turning back...

Grace, Melody and Eddy are all very different, but friendships are being formed. That is something I loved about The Near Miss. They're all struggling. Grace because her husband wants to be an inventor. He has done it before and wants to quit his job again to works on projects he loves. Only Grace is afraid that won't pay the bills. Skip and Lotte become good friends, they're an unlikely duo, but they get along wonderfully. Melody's main worry is money. How will she be able to pay the rent and where will the food on her table come from? Eddy is unlucky in love. He wants to keep Romy whatever it takes, but she doesn't want to be kept. All of these stories work. They're interesting, they're fascinating and moving from time to time as well. I couldn't put this book down and loved it from the first page.

A Near Miss is a story with several main characters. I liked that angle. They all have good and bad sides and Fran Cusworth is not afraid of showing them. I think that's a huge strength. It made me love this story even more. It's honest and it's realistic while it's also clearly fiction at the same time, a good combination. Especially since Fran Cusworth knows how to keep her balance. The story is wonderfully chaotic and so much is happening that it sometimes made my head spin, which is something I loved. It's fast-paced, but the story is also easy to follow. I can't express how much I enjoyed reading The Near Miss. it's absolutely brilliant.

Quietly exceptional

The Near Miss is the story of a group of people in Melbourne Australia that come together after Melody, a refugee from a Nimbin commune, saves a little girl from being run over by a car. The child’s mother invites Melody, her son, and the man that drove them all to the hospital over for a thankyou dinner along with their significant others, and this sets off a chain of interconnected events that see relationships break and new ones form, jobs lost and found, and realisations discovered.

At one point while reading, it crossed my mind that the characters in this story were either neurotic or dull witted or both, and for a while there, I felt it wasn’t going anywhere. I soon realised however, that Melody was the key. Not only was she the one character with a positive, and somewhat enlightened view of the world, but she also ended up being the one that provided the depth to the story that I feared might be missing. Her kindness and willingness to put herself out for the sake of others without asking anything in return had a kind of healing effect on the people around her.

I loved the writing style, particularly when it crossed the line into magical realism. This is a very talented author with a strong and relevant voice. Though it sometimes felt as if little was happening, by the end of the book I felt as if I’d read something quite exceptional.

Now this book takes it to a whole different level.. When I started reading and getting into the book really good, I was swept deeper into the story and characters, amazing at how the author wrote this book, which is hard to explain if you haven't read this book yet. The writing style is pretty humorous but yet a serious feel with the lives of the characters. The lives are so different and when they all come together...well... I suggest you grab a copy of this book!

I am writing to introduce you to the seventh edition of Ethics and the Conduct of Business, or if you are familiar with previous editions, to explain the improvements.

�

I have discovered that teaching business ethics is a very personal matter. We all have our own ideas about what should be covered and how the subject should be taught. My own ideas have evolved over the years as events in business and thinking in the field have developed. I find that my students have changed as well. In preparing successive editions of Ethics and the Conduct of Business, I have aimed not only to stay up to date but also to maintain flexibility so that instructors can combine the textbook material and cases with their own preferences in approach and coverage.

�

The first decision in adopting a textbook in business ethics is between single-author works and anthologies. I have tried to combine the best of both by including a wide range of positions and arguments that typify an anthology along with a unifying focus in which the different voices are engaged in a common discussion. In writing the book, I have avoided presenting a distinctive view of my own but have attempted, instead, to be an informative guide through the many debates that occur over the issues considered. The format of most chapters is to identify the most important issues—posed by privacy, say, or advertising or employee rights—describe the major positions that have been taken on these issues, and then explain and evaluate the arguments for and against each of these positions. This issue-positions-arguments organization has the advantages of presenting ongoing debates in a comprehensive, balanced, and rigorous manner that allows students to think for themselves and discover where they stand. The ultimate benefit of this approach is to facilitate exciting and constructive classroom discussion.

The most substantial change in the new edition is in the presentation of applied ethical reasoning. Although Ethics and the Conduct of Business still has a chapter on major ethical theories, it is preceded by the presentation of a novel framework that I have developed in my own teaching. It begins with an examination of the ethics of market trades or exchanges. What rules apply to buyers and sellers in purely voluntary, arm’s-length transactions? I then show that much business activity occurs when people take themselves out of the market by agreeing to assume certain roles and relationships with new responsibilities. Thus, much of business activity occurs among economic agents who are not engaging in simple economic exchanges but have chosen to organize their productive activity in roles and relationships, including firms. Please take a look at the treatment of applied ethical reasoning in the new edition, and I believe you and your students will find it very helpful.

Rare is the instructor who is completely happy with any of the business ethics textbooks on the market. Hence, the number that keeps increasing. I began writing this one twenty years ago because I was dissatisfied with the textbooks available at the time, and you may think that only you could write the ideal textbook for your own use. Excellent teaching text

Have used this text (2nd and now 3rd editions)to teach business ethics classes at the graduate and undergraduate levels for several years. It is well written and popular with students. Case studies represent the spectrum of ethics issues found in business today. The foundational ethics theory is clearly articulated, appropriate and sufficient.

Pure hell to read from front to back - bring coffee!

This was a required text for my business ethics course and has to be the worst textbook that I've ever had the unfortunate task of reading. In five weeks, I had to read this book from cover to cover and it was an absolute bore. Small type, wordy, and inferior to even my business law and accounting textbooks.

While the subject matter is important, this book could stand a serious facelift.

About the Author
Dr. Amit Mitra is Associate Dean in the College of Business and Professor in the Department of Management at Auburn University. His research interests are in the areas of quality assurance, quality management, regression analysis, warranty analysis, applied statistics, and multicriteria modeling. Dr. Mitra has published numerous articles, some of which have appeared in journals such as Management Science, Decision Sciences, Journal of the American Statistical Association, International Journal of Production Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, American Journal of Mathematical and Management Sciences, European Journal of Operational Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Computers and Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Quality Engineering, and International Journal of Quality and Reliability Management. Dr. Mitra is also the author of the book titled, Fundamentals of Quality Control and Improvement , Second Edition, Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, 1998, which is used both nationally and internationally. He has conducted short courses for professionals in Total Quality Management, Quality Assurance, Statistical Process Control, and Design of Experiments, and has also assisted with implementation of statistical process control in industries. A sound introductory text

This book could serve as the text for an introductory course in Quality Management and Control at the junior or senior level. If an engineering or business undergraduate can afford only one course in Quality, then this would be a suitable text for that course. The level of mathematics can be well managed by students not particularly good at analytical skills.

Amazingly helpful book, will use for future jobs and life

This item is non-expendable for Industrial Engineers and Operations Management. Statistics incorporated into improvement applications; there are some relatively sophisticated ideas in their utilizing probability distributions and such. But the best thing about it are the Chapters on Control Charts... simple tool but seems extremely effective in counter-acting many problems in manufacturing/service jobs.
