Excellent Introduction To Robotics & Electronics Construction Using Lego Mindstorms NXT

This well organized book on customizing the Lego NXT Robotic System serves several hobbyist and educational goals in an outstanding fashion. It is a full introduction to sensors, actuators, and microcontroller-based robotics in the context of the Lego NXT System. In the process of describing the sensors, customization of NXT parts and support chips and electronics it provides an excellent introduction to hobbyist electronic construction. Finally, together with David Cook's excellent "Robot Building for Beginners", also in the excellent Apress Series, it provides a though introduction to the parts and techniques for constructing and debugging all types of hobbyist robotics and electro-mechanical systems. The differences from the previous excellent edition of "Extreme NXT" are subtle yet important: improved illustrations of construction technique are provided throughout the book; exciting additional projects on GSR (skin resistance measurement) and interfacing the NXT brick with a keyboard interface liven this edition, additonal explanatory material is included in the chapter on I2C interfaces and in Appendix A on electronic construction techniques.

I would recommend this excellently presented and illustrated book as a well organized tutorial in many aspects of robotics and electronic construction.

A Must Buy if you want more NXT Sensors and the Knowledge to DIY!

This book, unlike a newer wave of books and sites regarding NXT and LEGO, focus is on the extension of NXT and its extension by way of your own building electronic sensors. This is not a book where you have to buy tons of parts sold by a third-party, nor is it an ad for such companies.

Rather, and much to the authors' credit, this books teaches you about the internals of NXT --not reject the NXT "brain-brick" as not worth using due to particular limitations-- it is a book that guides you through the expansion of the NXT "brain-bricks" abilities; this is much welcome!

If you are a beginner or intermediate electronics hobbyist then you MUST get this book. As I am not advanced in my own knowledge I am not sure how this book could be received if one were say an electrical engineer; but, no matter, for me this is a MUST BUY BOOK!

I can say nothing more endorsing than, "this book ought to have been packaged with the NXT 2.0 LEGO kit as the kit's manual!"

Caveat Emptor! This book is not really a LEGO NXT book!

My 10-year-old son is very into LEGOs and participates in LEGO League at school. We're always interested on looking at books covering LEGO building techniques and the LEGO NXT/Mindstorms sets and this one sounded fun. HOWEVER, the description is misleading and doesn't really clue the buyer into the content and intent of the book, which is NOT to explore the world of LEGO NXT, but to build DIY electronics projects using LEGO NXT parts. If you are looking for electronics projects and have a Mindstorms set lying around waiting to be hacked (as well as assorted electronics odds and ends and soldering equipment), then this is the book for you! We're talking DIY circuit boards and using blowtorches to melt holes in light bulbs kinds of project here. NOTE that you need to be OK with taking things apart and rendering them ineligible for competition! If, like us, you're looking to expand your knowledge of the possibilities within the constraints of the NXT sets and software, you're out of luck.

Learn to play guitar before a live audience!

Good wholesome dose of Tom Waits fakebook. Plenty of songs, including many new ones from Real Gone and Orphans. Wish there were more Rain Dogs but, hey, I'll take what I can get. Good selection, easy easy to read, excellent binding: survived a few road trips in better condition than me. Recommended for the musically challenged.

Tom Waits Little Black songbook

This book is a very good collection of Tom Waits songs. It contains 80 songs. All of the wonderful lyrics of his songs are included. The format is for instruments that use chords. Their is no individual notes for melody, the chords are positioned over the lyrics where a change is made. The print is small. I use the book with my ukulele. But have also found myself just taking it out to read as a poetry book. Blue Valentine: " She sends me Blue Valentines, All the way from Philadelphia, To mark the anniversary, of someone that I use to be."

Gold, I tell you, pure gold

The only reason it's not 5 stars is that I wish there were more songs. That said, it's a really strong selection. The book is nice and portable, suitable for study in the world underground, flying sardine cans, and candlelit prowls in the dark woods. If you're a Tom Waits fan don't miss this - for the price, it's more than worth it. It even has a little guitar explanation at the opening, so if you want to learn guitar, there is a wealth of easy songs to practice. If you already play an instrument, I found they did a good job at including some slightly more sophisticated material, too.

For those who aren't familiar with Tom Waits, some people do not like his voice at first, so this book may be a good introduction to his lyrics and song structures. I love Tom's voice, and think it suits his songs perfectly, but it can be jarring to some at first, so this book could be a good little device to familiarize yourself with the greatest American songwriter before diving into to his excellent recordings.

Peale is a true Christian

This book gives the account of Dr. Peale's conversion experience to a vital relationship with Jesus Christ. His wife led him to the Lord, even though he was already a Methodist pastor. Many people claim that he was New Age and an evil perpetrator of false religion. The truth is that he was a master at applying Christianity to real life situations, when others were only interested in doctrinal correctness.
This is a great book and the title says it all: you have to be and remain tough-minded to shield yourself from all the negativity around you. Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, if there be any virtue or praise, thing on these things. You are not going to help anybody if you have a sad, bad, negative attitude. The world needs radically consistent happy and positive optimistic people or we'll go down the tubes.

The Discipline of Getting Done With This Book

My dogged desire to get through this book ruined the first half of a windsurfing vacation in Aruba.

It's very, very dry going, and at the end one wonders what, if anything the authors really had to say.

It sounds on the surface like cutting edge management practice. For instance Bossidy and Charan introduce the concept of "the social software of execution" as a key element for creating the framework for cultural change in the organization. They go on to elaborate, "A key component of software is what we call Social Operating Mechanisms". At this point I was on the edge of my chair, ready to absorb what was being teed up as an idea of potentially transformational impact. So what are Social Operating Mechanisms? The authors go on to explain, "These are formal or informal meetings, presentations, even memos or e-mail exchanges - anywhere that dialogue takes place".

Wow - this is really deep stuff...

One wonders why the authors don't simply refer to communication rather than Social Operating Mechanisms. And, as a separate matter, the lack of literacy is surprising. Since when, for example, are memos and e-mail exchanges places?

Stripped of all of this, what the authors have to say is simple common sense that can be summarized as follows:

* Successful companies have the important ability to get things done (or execute).

* Good leadership (knowing people, setting clear goals, following through, etc.) is a prerequisite of execution.

* Reward systems, communications, and feedback processes need to foster action and provide incentives for getting things done.

* Some people are more capable than others are to get things done. These are the people that should be put in positions of authority in the organization.

* Strategic plans need to reflect the real world and link to operational plans. They also need to be tested for feasibility in the context of the organization's capabilities.

None of this is rocket science, that is until one begins to cloak it in management techno speak such as that described above.

And one more thing. The editor should have had a "robust conversation" with the authors about their overuse of the word "robust". It's really annoying.

Manage or lead? Bossidy says leaders must manage!

Bossidy's Execution was one of five books assigned for a seminary leadership course. Yes, churches have come to realize that intelligent management practices are applicable to religious organizations.

The author's basic premise is that the old Leadership vs. Manager dichotomy is a false one. Visionary leaders who are "hands off" set their organizations up for failure. The tendency of departments is to promote their own agendas and cover their weaknesses. Those who oversee them must know enough about the people and activities under their charge to catch when things are going wrong. Further, true leaders need to be involve themselves in the details enough that they are setting the agenda, rather than allowing components of the organization to set disparate ones.

Proper execution is the current business buzz and trend. Yet, there is validity to the notion that leaders need to direct key details as well as the big vision.

Bottom-line: Execution was clearly geared for the business world. Yet the basic argument that leaders must dream dreams, but also direct the primary details, is important. For us non-business leaders, this may not be an enjoyable read. We overlook the author's warnings at our own peril, however. Bossidy offers us a leadership set of side and rearview mirrors--allowing us to see our blind spots.

Simple Wisdom But Profound

The book that Messrs. Bossidy and Charan have co-authored is a unique blend of practical advice and real business experiences drawn from several industries. It is especially powerful because it is superbly structured, easy to read, and free of jargon. There are many important messages in the book, almost one on every page. The key message is that corporate management has three principal goals: picking other leaders, setting strategic direction, and conducting operations. I believe that companies and organizations can use many of the ideas in this book to re-shape their thinking and to help change their corporate cultures and processes. In my years in corporate management, I came to recognize that the most important leadership challenge is that of identifying, developing, and selecting the future leadership team for a company. Picking great leaders can be a real challenge for any company and for any leader. I encourage all leaders to read this important book and to use it as a catalyst for change. There is much to be learned from this book and much to be reflected upon. Simple but profound.

All I Can Say Is, "Wow!"

This book cost me a lot of sleep because I continually stayed up late reading it each night until I finished it. What an amazing story of God's grace. This book shows that no one is too far gone to become a fully forgiven son of God and be used mightily in His kingdom. Bill's life before Christ was a picture of sin and selfishness and the transformation, nothing short of miraculous. If you are a parent with a wayward child I highly recommend this book because you will be encouraged at Bill's radical conversion and it will give you renewed hope for your son or daughter. I highly recommend this book, just don't plan on sleeping for a few nights until you get to the end!

You MUST read the book!!! AMAZING...

There are few times when I read a book and I can not stop reading it - this was one of those times. Bill Corum's life is the most amazing story of anyone you will ever read as he traveled thousands of miles across the country in prison chains, obsessed himself with money, power and sex and did things that should have left him dead countless times. If you are not a Christian - you must read this book to hear about the marvelous, wonderful, incredible forgiveness that comes from a God that is truly passionate about loving you completely - regardless of anything you have done in your past. If you are a Christian, you must read this book to hear about the amazing intimacy that God desires with you, personally, on a daily basis - you will walk away desiring more intimacy in your personal experience just as Bill's transformation and forgiveness experience has brought him there. Bill spent his early life running with the devil, and now spends his life touching countless prisoners across the nation by sharing his personal experience of God's incredible love and forgiveness with them. There is something very powerful when we hear true stories of amazing forgiveness. Bill's amazing redemption and encounter with the love of God is so powerful you will walk away from this book a changed person. This story has already led thousand of prisoners to a life of forgiveness....this story will change you....because it is real.

A Must Read!

This was an awesome book! Well written and captivating! I couldn't put it down. I'm a slow reader and it usually takes me many days to complete a book. I read this one quickly as it was so interesting, shocking, and ended with a heartfelt positive feeling. Having gone to school with the author likely helped keep my interest alive but it was mostly the way it was written. "The Ultimate Pardon" should be such an inspiration to someone that has had a troubled life with the law or families of someone who may have been incarcerated. I have shared this book with other family members as well as mentioning it to many others who I know will enjoy or benefit from reading it.

I thought it was great book. This is only my third or fourth book on the HA, so it is a relatively new topic for me. I really enjoyed the structure of the book and its history. I think this book is great for new readers who dont know too much about the HA.

Interesting but very dramatic

I am not sure how much of this book is factual. It seems the author is reaching for the "shock" factor more so than the Outlaw Bikers. I found the most interesting part to be the description of the individual Angels. I had heard a lot these names, and now I know why. If you can find this book for a decent price, its not a bad read. Just be prepared for the Canadian version of the Angels, because its focused heavily on them.

A good "story"?

I have read this book and I am drawn to wonder how much is just assumption? If you get through the first few chapters without falling asleep, it picks up. Most of what Yves has to say on the history end of the club, is stuff you see on TV all the time. Nothing new.
As far as the "story", well, you can tell that he had to make up most of it. It is full of assumptions and hearsay. There would be NO way that he could know certain things that were writen. Let's face it, the people are dead and could not talk to the author.
He writes about things that agencies tell him are facts, when in the real world, they are what we call FUNDING facts. Stories made up to accuire public support and funds from different levels of government. And maybe to keep Mr. Lavigne in a job. Nice try, but I don't think so.
This book was written to strike fear into people and manipulate a system that is very one sided. It's also for people who know nothing about true bikers or thier lifestyle.
Sell your "STORY" somewhere else Mr. Lavigne.
