Four Titillating Halloween Treats
By Liz Castillo
If you are looking for a few sexy treats this Halloween, then look no further. Alexa Riley knows the way to your sweet tooth and has the ability to awaken your dirtiest fantasies.

The newest treat, Halloween Treat, is everything you've come to expect from Alexa Riley. The hero, Jack, has never looked at any woman the way he looks at Raven. Raven doesn't want to believe that he sees her as anything other than his nephew's teacher. But Jack is ready to make his move, and Raven is going to learn just how deep his feelings run for her. When Jack makes his first move, my heart skips a beat with his demands. His take charge attitude to stunning and there is way the reader or Raven can deny his anything. This short story is completely captivating and deliciously satisfying.

Buy Me 3 is the hypnotizing tale of Many and Charles. Mandy had been working with Charles for the last thirty days, and now she's decided to enter into the Mistress Auction. When Charles learns of his girl's decision, he finally puts plans in place to claim his girl once and for all. The differences between the two are compared to as a devil and angel. Mandy doesn't understand Charles and his actions, but she's willing to see where this relationship can go. Charles' protectiveness and domination could cause some to turned off, but as you learn more about him, you can't help but fall in love with him completely. This short story is mesmerizing story about two people who have to go through many ups and downs to finally find their way to each other.

Riding Red is the alluring story about the new girl in town, Ruby moved into Gray Ridge hoping for a fresh start. When Dominic sets eyes on her, something inside him switches on and he knows he's just seen the woman he's fated to spend the rest of his life with. Ruby doesn't know about the people in this town are not what they seem, they are shifters. Dominic makes it known that she is his, and when the time is right, he going to claim once and for all. This story is primal and aminalist, but the love that flows between the two is passionate and intense. This is seductive new take on Little Red Ridding Hood.

Taking What's Wicked is the spellbinding story that revolves around Dante, Porter and Sabrina. Sabrina is out on Halloween night, looking for a little fun and a way to release some pent up frustration. But Sabrina's takes a drastic turn when Dante and Porter set their eyes on the sexy little witch. Sabrina gets taken several times rough and hard, but things aren't what they seem. There is more to the story between these three bewitching individuals. This story contains content that some may find hard to shallow, but the ending is worth the wait. It's a wickedly tempting read that slightly naughtier than your average Alexa Riley story. I was pleasantly surprised with this enthralling mischievous short story.

Sweet Treats! Review by Christine [...]
By Christine Indriolo
"Halloween Treats" is by author Alexa Riley.
My Rating: 4 Stars

"Halloween Treats" is a bundle deal. Included there are three previously released novellas: "Buy Me 3," "Riding Red," and "Taking What's Wicked." And one new story, "Halloween Treats."

"Halloween Treats" is a very short, intense romance about an elementary school teacher, Raven Treat, and the uncle of one of her students, Jack Bates. I actually lucked out when purchasing this bundle since I've only read one of the four, "Riding Red."

As in standard Alexa Riley fashion, we have an obsessive, possessive hero who will do anything to claim his girl. Jack is the gorgeous uncle of one of her students and has been crushing on Raven pretty obviously for a while. However it isn't obvious to her. Raven is pretty naive. Finally after Jack decides he's had enough of waiting for her to admit her feelings for him, he becomes the aggressor. I liked Jack. A lot. Although he was the typical demanding AR alpha, Jack was not mean. Yes, he stalked and he claimed but he was a man in love. He was romantic and sexy and sweet. And although Jack wasn't inexperienced, nor was he a virgin, he was definitely no manwhore.

Raven was inexperienced and a little shy. But she was also intelligent and confident. In other words, she wasn't the typical AR "doormat." That said, I give "Halloween Treats" a four star rating. *Note...The other novellas will have separate reviews posted individually. But I will list the star ratings below:

"Riding Red" 4 Stars
"Buy Me 3" 3.5 Stars
"Taking What's Wicked." 3.5 Stars

Buy Me 2
3.5 stars
Mandy puts herself up for auction and finds herself in a 30 day contract with her insufferable ex-boss, Charles. Then they realize 30 days won't be enough to sate themselves... This story provided some spicy moments with BDSM elements and a very possessive hero.

Riding Red
4 stars
In this steamy fairy-tale reboot, wolf shifter Dominic, discovers his mate when the delectably curvy heroine, Ruby, comes to town and buys his family bakery. The catch-she's human and doesn't know she's his mate..yet. This was a cute and charming read.

Taking What's Wicked
3 stars
This threesome really had me wondering what I was reading when I started their story! Questionable consent (with everything becoming clear at the end), Dante, Porter, and Sabrina push the limits outside the bar, in the van, at the cabin... This story was okay, but a smidge out of my comfort zone.

Halloween Treats
4 stars
After a bit of careful maneuvering, Jack finally gets the nerve to ask sexy teacher, Raven Treat, out for a date. Raven and Jack's story contains insta-love and some sexy sizzle..along with a sweet ending..perfect read for a lazy afternoon!

An Arrow's Flight, by Mark Merlis

An Arrow’s Flight is a joyous and eccentric tour-de-force by the author of American Studies and Man About Town. The siege of Troy has dragged on for ten years, with no end in sight, when an oracle supplies the Greeks with the recipe for victory. All they need is Pyrrhus, son of the fallen Achilles. But Pyrrhus has been putting his godlike form to profitable use as a go-go dancer in the big city. Why should he leave the party, give up his hard-bought freedom, just because some voice in a jar says he must strap on a suit of hand-me-down armor? Still, he has always known destiny had plans for him, some more glittering future than life as a used-up hustler on a park bench somewhere. So he sails for Troy, hoping to transform himself into the bronzed immortal history requires. Instead, on an unscheduled detour, he stumbles through his first lessons on how to be a man. Magically blending ancient headlines and modern myth, Merlis creates a fabulous new world where legendary heroes declare their endowments in the personal ads and any panhandler just might be a divinity in disguise. Comical, moving, startling in its audacity and range, An Arrow’s Flight is a profound meditation on gay identity, straight power, and human liberation. -- Lambda Literary Award, Gay Men’s Fiction, 1998 A boldly conceived narrative of uncommon artistry…Merlis’s insight into human nature and his ability to find and articulate grace in the ordinary process of human exchange is remarkable. Among the many books written about AIDS and the gay experience, Merlis’s novel is a stunning standout. – Publishers Weekly (starred review) Equal parts Iliad and City of Night…Merlis transforms the gimmick into a miraculously wacky, droll, and sometimes tragic story. – Village Voice Top-of-the-line gay fiction, compulsively readable and very, very sexy. – The Advocate Dazzles with its originality, its willingness to take astonishing risks, its triumphant conjuration of a world at once sternly archaic and bracingly contemporary…This is a beautiful, haunting work by one of America's finest novelists. – Paul Russell

Amazon.com Review
Mark Merlis, who debuted in 1995 with the marvelous American Studies, has once again worked magic, producing a book that is as momentous as it is mysteriously moving. Set during the Trojan War, An Arrow's Flight recounts the story of Achilles's son Pyrrhus, prophesied to be the soldier who conquered Troy. But Merlis's tale departs from the standard versions of the story: here, Pyrrhus is a go-go boy and hustler who lives in the demiworld of the gay ghetto and bears a closer resemblance to characters from John Rechy's City of Night than anybody in Edith Hamilton's Mythology. In its opening pages, An Arrow's Flight seems to be little more than a clever postmodern gag, but Merlis knows exactly what he is doing, and the novel quickly becomes a unique, emotionally overwhelming masterpiece. Merlis's historical and sexual sleights of hand end up thrilling and shocking by locating us somewhere between myth and history, between fiction and fable. The very themes and ideas of An Arrow's Flight shimmer and shift before our eyes: war, male friendship, Troy, AIDS, sexual identity, and Vietnam are all explored and elucidated. By the end, the novel resonates with beauty, intelligence, and empathy. --Michael Bronski

From Publishers Weekly
In a boldly conceived narrative of uncommon artistry, the author of American Studies succeeds in making the implausible not only plausible but probable as he wryly juxtaposes contemporary icons and lingo with long-familiar schoolbook characters. Bringing to vivid life in the late 20th century figures from Greek mythology, Merlis tells the story of Achilles' gay 21-year-old son, Pyrrhus, and how he comes to embrace a destiny that takes him far beyond the urban gay ghetto?and the half-hearted "job" of dancing nude and hustling?that he's resigned himself to. One-quarter divine, Pyrrhus not only possesses extraordinary beauty and the world's most lustrous red hair, but his sense of himself is unflappable in the face of mere mortals whose truncated imaginations can't fathom gay love. Themes of destiny, the quest for personal truth, the nature of love and desire, even the very contemporary issue of gays in the military are explored in spectacularly imaginative style. In addition to his deft use of language and narrative technique, Merlis's insight into human nature?the nature of gay men in particular?and his ability to find and articulate grace in the ordinary process of human exchange is remarkable. Among the many books written about AIDS and the gay experience, Merlis's novel is a stunning standout.

From Library Journal
Picture Achilles disguised as a auto mechanic, who "could get into polishing armor and stuff" but who thinks "rotating strangers' tires [gets] old pretty quickly." In this audacious retelling of the fall of Troy, Merlis (American Studies, LJ 8/94) constantly plays with the combination of ancient and modern, referring to television and the Vietnam War in the same sentences that mention sacrifices to the gods. The sharp and slyly witty narration consistently offers surprises. The thoroughly modern hero, Pyrrhus, the son of Achilles and a "hemidemigod," dreams of life in the "City," a gay mecca that could just as easily be 20th-century San Francisco as ancient Athens. He first appears dancing naked on a bar, making his living as a hustler and go-go boy. The story of his transformation as he is recruited to go to war and redefine himself is compelling and original, offering insights into modern gay life and identity. Highly recommended for all collections.?Daniel Starr, Museum of Modern Art Lib., New York

No Summary Will Prepare You for How Truly Wonderful This Is
By A Customer
I haven't been this impressed with a work of fiction in quite some time. Mark Merlis sets himself up to fail, with his idea of semi-updating the Trojan war, and then succeeds so wondrously. He catches the reader quickly with opening chapters that are funny, engaging, swift-moving (any man or woman who was ever young and confused will identify, but gay men in particular will laugh out loud) then deftly begins weaving in deeper themes. In some ways, his subject is the same as Homer's (or Shakespeare's, or just about any great writer's): what does it mean to be a man? His answer is slowly and beautifully revealed to the reader, as it is to his protagonist. The surprising ending (always the toughest part of a novel, especially for one this original) is so well done I turned the last pages in amazement. And heartbreak. Ignore this book at your peril. You won't make a better purchase this year.

A Classic from a Classic
By Ricky Hunter
I was interested in this book as I studied Classical Studies in university and I enjoy gay fiction. This seemed a fascinating combination for a book. I was more impressed than I expected to be. It was a nice spin on the many books that look at the period at the beginning of the AIDS crisis in that the reader does not immediately see the connection. The initial talk of gods and demigods and, god forbid, hemidemigods, sets one up for a different sort of story. One does not suspect that the story of the Fall of Troy can be used to show the meaning of being gay in such a contemporary way but that is the thrill of this novel. Pyrrhus and Philoctetes were superb choices to guide the reader through this novel but the joy also came from the minor characters who pop up fully formed throughout the novel, such as Admetus and Leucon. Too many gay novels contain a hero that is a beautiful and sexual god, in a metaphorical sense, that it is nice to see a novel where the hero (almost) is a god in a literal sense but somehow writtin all the more real for all of that.

BRILLIANT!
By A Customer
"How did he do that!?" That's the thought that kept popping up in my head as I read this wonderful wonderful book.
The anachronisms are brilliantly funny & clever; Merlis is a pure genius & has written a perfect piece of literature. I highly recommend anyone to read this novel; particularly if you enjoy Greek mythology as I do... Merlis succeeds in humanizing these bigger-than-life characters...
A definite must-read!

Path to the Silent Country: Charlotte Bronte's Story, by Lynne Reid Banks

‘Path to the Silent Country’ is Lynne Reid Banks’ follow up to the critically-acclaimed ‘Dark Quartet: The Story of the Brontes’.

In Haworth Parsonage, in the rural landscape of the Yorkshire moors, Charlotte Bronte suffers alone.

She has experienced a triple blow - the death of her beloved sisters and brother.

Paralysed by misery and her only solace - religion - not bringing her any comfort, she turns to writing to escape her grief.

Charlotte is for the first time in her life able to travel to the capital, following on from the success of ‘Jane Eyre’ and ‘Shirley’. She immerses herself in London society, meeting influential figures from the literary elite.

But at every turn, her identity is questioned.

Returning to the parsonage, Charlotte is again crippled by loss. Her father becomes sick with bronchitis, and she herself is gripped by influenza. Not only this, the unrequited love of one George Smith plagues her, along with the amorous pleas of Mr Arthur Nichols.

'Path to the Silent Country' is a gripping fictionalised account of one woman's struggle to draw together a life shattered by grief.

It is a story of love sacrificed for the approval of an ailing father, and of courage in the face of public scrutiny. Above all, it is a story of defiance.

Praise for Lynne Reid Banks:

"Lynne Reid Banks communicates her story with clarity and conviction that establish her among the noblest of factual fiction writers" - Guardian

‘A novel which will open many eyes afresh to the lives of the remarkable and gifted Bronts’ — Yorkshire Post

Lynne Reid Banks is a best-selling British author for both children and adults. Her first novel, ‘The L-Shaped Room’, was adapted into a successful film, as was her children’s book ‘The Indian in the Cupboard’. Her account of the lives of the Bronts, ‘Dark Quartet’, won the Yorkshire Arts Association Award and was followed by a sequel, ‘Path to the Silent Country: Charlotte Bronte’s Years of Fame’.

A book worth reading.
By R. Jean Jumper
The author challenges the readers intellect and confounds the emotions in this intensely personal look at the life of Charlotte Bronte and her family. The book is hard to put down as the reader searches for some hint of a happy ending, even knowing as we do, how the story must end. This is not a child's book, nor a light book of romantic fiction. Path to Silent Country will entice you to turn back to the Misses Bronte's novels and other works and reread them with new insights and deeper understanding.

Good and necessary follow-up to the Dark Quartet

Good and necessary follow-up to the Dark Quartet. Hard to read of the deaths, but it portrayed all the heartache of Charlotte Bronte's life realistically and faithfully.

Poor editing
By Kelcey
The subject is certainly interesting and I'm guessing the writing is good, but I find it impossible to go on reading this book. The editing is atrocious. There is the constant spell check problem, with the wrong word chosen instead of the correct spelling of the right word. However, this book adds a new editing problem. Suddenly in the middle of a sentence is a period, then the next word will be capitalized and the sentence continued. Simply too much trouble to bother with.
