This book is like an amusement park of words. As a reader you go up, down, sideways, back and forth. Every direction is unique and purely for fun. Skipping around from thought to thought, I laughed out loud at some and smiled quietly to myself at others. The final result was a fun read. This book made me happy. I'm glad I read it.

Essential Reading

Exactly what I was looking for

I purchased this book to prep for technical interviews and it was just what I was looking for. Each topic is covered thoroughly and should serve well whether you're learning for the first time or just need a refresher (like me). The example code is clean and compact, and there are lots of colorful figures throughout. The book itself is also nice and compact, about the size of a large novel rather than a huge backbreaking textbook.

My only (very small) complaint is that the code doesn't follow the PEP 8 style guide.

This controversial book by Ivan Van Sertima, the Guyanese historian, linguist, and anthropologist, claims that Africans had been to the New World centuries before Columbus arrived there in 1492. Citing--among other things--the huge Negroid-looking Olmec heads of Central Mexico and the similarities between the Aztec and Egyptian calendars and pyramid structures, Van Sertima pieces together a hidden history of pre-Columbian contact between Africans and Native Americans. He also puts forth the possibility that Columbus may have already known about a route to the Americas from his years in Africa as a trader in Guinea. About the Author
Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) studied at Oxford, failing to take his degree but discovering opium. He later met Coleridge, Southey and the Wordsworths. From 1828 until his death he lived in Edinburgh and made his living from journalism.

Barry Milligan is a professor of English at Wright State University and author of Pleasures and Pains (Virginia UP, 1995).

Beautiful prose style

Interesting work, in a beautiful prose style. Obviously, this is not for the general public (at least today, although presumably more so when it was first published). It is a slim volume, in this, its original published version, and, as others have pointed out, is not mainly a "confession" regarding substance abuse. The author gives a fair amount of background information on his life, which I found entertaining and informative and thought really served the author's purpose of allowing you to get to know him and put his opium dependence in context. If you have more than a passing interest in the Romantic era and/or bohemian lifestyles, like I do, you might rate this 4.5 stars (which is my precise rating) or even 5. Just note that reading the author's prose takes concentration, especially for the modern reader. It's nothing as difficult as Sir Thomas Browne or Robert Burton, but it's far from something you'd read from Oprah's Book Club.

By the time Thomas De Quincey wrote "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater" the subject of narcotics was very much a taboo, thus the author was the founder of a new type of literature - addiction literature.
The book`s structure is as follows: Part l (To the Reader and Preliminary Confessions), Part II (Pleasures of Opium, Introduction to the Pains of Opium, The Pains of Opium, May 1818, June 1819), Appendix and Footnotes.
When De Quincey was seven, his father died, living him in the care of four tutors. After changing several esteemed boarding schools, the protagonist came to Eton, where he discovered his passion for Old Greek and Ancient literature. However, he wanted to drop out of school when he was seventeen but his guardians didn't approve, therefore he ran away from Eton.
He traveled to Northern Wales where the villagers asked him to do small work as an exchange to food and a place to say. Unfortunately, he ran short of money and he was forced to move on, thus he found himself in London. There he almost starved to death, but a fifteen-years-old prostitute - Ann -saved him and thus the two became friends. Her gesture and his sympathy for her followed him all his life, but he did not see her again because he had never asked for her last name.
Being fed up with poverty, De Quincey asks an old school friend - Earl of D - to lend him some money to return home. He reconciles with his family and goes to Oxford University.
From this point on, the narrator begins to tell his reader about his good and bad experiences with opium. As De Quincey confesses, the previous period of his life left deep marks on his health - severe stomachaches, intolerance to certain foods and psychic traumas. The first time he used opium was after a friend suggested it as a pain-killer for toothache. Afterwards, he began consuming it regularly by counting the drops .Throughout the years he had to consume more because the doze didn't have the same pleasant effects. The obsessive counting of the drops may represent the fact that De Quincey wanted to keep his addiction under control, because he took it for medical reasons, not for pleasure.
My favorite part of the book is when De Quincey began to feel the bad effects of opium such as the hallucinations and nightmares, which usually took place in Orient and North Africa (China, Turkey, and Egypt etc.), places that exported opium to Europe. The Malay, who has previously showed up at his door and to whom De Quincey offers a good amount of opium, he will also appear in the author's dreams.
The style of the Confessions is erudite, seasoned with Greek terms, references to Ancient literature and other domains. (art, economy, politic science etc.) Even if the title suggests the idea of confessions regarding the author's life, here opium is the center piece of the book, with its positive and negative effects. There are also many digressions that might annoy the reader, but they have their purpose, such as the causes and the justification for De Quincey's use of opium.

"Durante mi formación académica como piloto, la bibliografía con la que tenía que estudiar correspondía a ediciones realizadas en otros países; no encontrando material nacional con ejemplos y casos adecuados a nuestro espacio aereo, lo que estaba a mi alcance sobre argentina eran escritos realizados por profesores en formato de cuadernillo. En el a�o 2008 di comienzo a mi actividad bloguera, con el fin de publicar informacion sobre la actividad aerea, luego escriba� varios trabajos de analisis sobre distintas tema�ticas necesarias para la formacion, como son manuales de VOR, descifrado de mensajes meteorologicos. Nivel de Transicion, y varios tutoriales más. Estos siempre basados en legislacion, usos y costumbres y ejemplos de nuestro país, ofreciendo casos que fueran practicos al momento de volar. A medida que publicaba recibia agradecimientos de muchos pilotos por este tipo manuales ya que era de mucha utilidad en sus primeras horas de vuelo y otros en la realizacion del curso teorico para la licencia de piloto comercial. Asi nacia la idea de ampliar lo publicado hasta ese momento e incorporar nuevos temas, da�ndole un formato de manual para favorecer la lectura y agrupado por temas. A la hora de estudiar otro problema con el que me encontraba es que la informacion estaba diseminada en varias publicaciones, un caso testigo es la reglamentacion, que no siempre se encuentra al alcance de todos o a la hora de buscar no sabemos donde hacerlo. Sobre este tema he incorporado las ultimas actualizaciones sobre las principales reglas de vuelo, planes de vuelo, espacios aereos, sistemas de navegacion, como guia para que el piloto tenga facilitada la tarea de aprendizaje. Este trabajo no hubiera sido posible sin el ánimo y el apoyo de familiares que me han motivado siempre a su realizacion. Gran cantidad de horas invertidas en la realizacion, mucho esfuerzo, pero con un placer enorme que me reconforta el espi�ritu. Espero que este libro sea muy util para todos aquellos pilotos que aman la actividad y que colabore en su formacion. Si logro el objetivo que el lector tenga un texto que lo ayude en parte de su formacion habra realizado el sue�o que me lleva a escribirlo." Roberto Gomez

Muchos problemas de edicion y programacion en version digital

El libro no es malo, aunque muchas de las notas, fotos y detalles son de un libro en ingles que ya tenia El GRAN problema de este libro es lo mal programado o editado para Kindle que esta. La mitad de las fotos no se ven (lo baje y volvi a bajar en mas de10 oportunidades y no hubo caso). Salen en negro y me perdi de entender mejor muchas cosas (principalmente los ejemplos sobre cosas locales: Fir Ezeiza, TMA, etc).
Los tetos tambien. Le cambias el tamano de la tipografia y ya se desacomoda todo el texto y pierde el sentido.
Ademas, se lo regale a mi hermano q tambien es piloto y le paso lo mismo que a mi. Yo lo tengo en ipad y mi hermano en pc. El autor lo sabe porwue le escribi y me respondio...Ojala los editores lo resuelvan p mas adelante, para futuros compradores.
