Very Interesting, Inspiring, and Readable Book
By A voracious reader
This book, and its subject, were of particular interest to me as my own father worked for Mr. LeTourneau in the late 1950s and early '60s. My dad had so many wonderful things to say about what a pleasure it was to work for Mr. LeTourneau, I had to read this book for myself to find out what it was that made him so well-liked by his employees, which is quite a feat in our day and time.
I was impressed with Mr. LeTourneau's honesty and humility about his own shortcomings, about the mistakes he made (and how he learned from them what NOT to do the next time), his ingenuity, his imagination and vision, and his willingness to live on very little in order to accomplish his goals. I was even more impressed with the way he kept his priorities in order, attended church regularly and took part in its leadership, included his wife as a valued partner in his life, and also his children as they grew older.
I would recommend this book to anyone; even my reluctant 13-year-old reader (a son) thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were times that I got bogged down in some of Mr. LeTourneau's descriptions of the machines he invented, but my son enjoyed it all. One of the things that really struck me about Mr. LeTourneau's life was that he was born just before the turn of the twentieth century, yet he was always on the cutting edge of technology -- a real innovator. Kudos to his memory!

God is my business partner!
By Kevin S. Cullis
There is SO much Godly wisdom besides the history and stories in there that you HAVE to get it. I read it in two days, not because it's an easy read, it is, but because of content is enlightening for me as a business person starting "Fish Tank Startups" for Christians wanting to start a business of their own. LOVED the part about how to change third world countries in his four points. PERFECT! Get it, you won't regret it.

Jump Wings And Secrets, by Raymond Hunter Pyle

Each soldier in Vietnam fought his own war. For some it was a war with loneliness, boredom, and endless fatigue. For others it was a war with unyielding jungle, mountains, and disease. For still others it was a war with terror and death and all of the above. And then there was the secret war fought mostly by Army Special Forces and Navy Seals. For these secret warriors, the war was seldom boring and always dangerous. The mountains and jungles of Laos and Cambodia were their playground, and disease, terror, and death stalked them on every mission.
Sergeant First Class Ed Potter, returning for his third tour in-country with the 101st Airborne, was on a short tour, just six months this time. While in the states, he had passed the Special Forces selection battery and did well in all phases of the SF assessment course. He expected orders to the SF Q course in six months. In the meantime he expected to be placed in a platoon sergeant’s job with the 101st at Camp Eagle or Camp Evans. His first surprise came when the replacement battalion sent him for an interview with a Special Forces Major who asked him if he would be interested in working for MACV-SOG and training and leading an airmobile quick reaction force to support Special Forces recon teams operating out of FOB1 at Phu Bai. His second surprise came when the major wouldn’t tell him what MACV-SOG, or the FOB was, did, or where they operated until after he volunteered and signed a confidentiality agreement.
Ed jumped at the chance to work with the Special Forces instead of waiting out his time in a regular airborne infantry unit. He wouldn’t be Special Forces, but he would be working for them with the potential to share in part of their missions and training. What could be better for an NCO waiting to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg? An hour after the interview, Ed found himself on a helicopter heading for headquarters 5th Special Forces at Nha Trang and the beginning of a short tour that would seem longer and more dangerous than anything he had ever experienced.

Gotta Read
By Dennis Price
I spent two tours in Vietnam with the Navy Seabees, I was right where this novel takes place from Phu Bai to Dong Ha. While we didn't do a hell of a lot with the Army, we worked closely with the Marines. His depictions of the environment are dead on, the heat, stink and dust. I don't know why any reader would rate it a "one star". These Strike Teams were real, not a figment of the author's imagination. One of the most realistic books about Vietnam I've read.

Genuine!
By Wildcatt
While this is a novel, it reads like an actual narrative. I served as a LRRP, not SOG, but I swear this author knew that of which he was writing. He must have been SOG or LRRP-Ranger because he knew the tactics and scenarios. Kudos to the author. He not only conveyed a great story but also the special brotherhood that was the norm for recon teams. He even carried that writing into his description of "Hamburger Hill" fight. Excellent book!

Something that Hollywood can't come up with
By Chris Hopkins
Pyle s tale about ed is something that Hollywood script writers can not even come close to making up. Pyle s great writing and vivid descriptions keep you on the edge of your seat while at the same time making you laugh and then make you cringe and shutter at commanders and soldiers poor treatment of someone who has literally stared death in the face two dozen times and incredibly still draws another breath.

88 Days - A true story of Somali Pirates in the Indian Ocean, by Francis Roucou

Capt. Francis Roucou had wanted to pursue a life at sea since childhood, but his youthful dreams could not have foreseen an encounter with modern day pirates.

‘88 Days’ tells of the fear and stress endured by the crew of the MV Indian Ocean
Explorer after their vessel was captured off Assumption island by Somali pirates in 2009. It also details the admirable manner in which Capt, Roucou, after ignoring an offer of freedom in exchange for information on two other tourist vessels in the vicinity, navigated his way through the minefield of ransom negotiations and the daily unpredictability of their captors to bring his entire crew safely home to Seychelles.

About the author:

Francis Roucou was born in Seychelles in 1965.

After spending three months in captivity, away from your loved ones and living each day in hope of being freed from Somali pirates, many of us would not dare to go back to sea.

But captain Francis Roucou, who two years ago was one of the first Seychellois to be captured and taken to Somalia by pirates, says he is more determined than ever to go back to work at sea.

The sea has always been his passion, and as a child his dream was to learn all about navigation, he explains.

Born under the zodiac sign Libra in October 1965, Mr Roucou is the fourth child of six. He was also among the first group of students at the National Youth Service.

“During my childhood at Anse la Mouche, I did not get much access to the seaside as I lived far up in the hills, but this did not stop me from keeping true to my dream of being a navigator,” he says.

Mr Roucou, a former student of the Maritime School from 1983-1984, says it is hard to explain what it is that fascinates him about the sea, but he had always wanted to tour the Seychelles archipelago and know more about our waters.

His first work experience at sea was in 1985, and after spending 18 months on French tuna boats he went on a nine-month course in France.

Back at sea he joined a French ship that was carrying out research on tuna species in the Indian Ocean. As a second officer, he explored small island states in the region such as Mauritius, Madagascar, Reunion and Comoros.

Mr Roucou was then asked to become captain of Seychelles’ first tuna vessel, called the Spirit of Koxe, but after spending some time on this ship things did not work out as he wished, and he became determined to go back to school in France to learn more about navigation.

When he came back he did some freelance work with the Islands Development Company and on a boat called the Shearwater, which made trips to African countries including South Africa, until 1999.

In January 2000 he took over the Indian Ocean Explorer and was still in command when it was hijacked near Assumption island in 2009.

The biggest challenge of his career came when he was made captain of the Spirit of Koxe as he was still only 25.

“I had to be responsible for a vessel that was worth around R30 million, and I hadn’t got much experience,” he says.

Apart from being a career, the sea is where Mr Roucou spends his leisure time as he loves sailing, windsurfing and diving.

He adds that even when spending time with his three children, he prefers to take them to sea. Since the piracy incident he has been back to sea, reaching Maldives. Now the fear has gone but he knows the risks are still there.

Captain Francis Roucou (right) presenting his book to President James Michel (left)
For the time being, however, he is not working but busy writing a book. As yet untitled it will, he says, describe in detail his face-to-face encounter with the Somali pirates.

The story talks about the time before the ordeal, when the boat and crew were captured, the first days in the hands of the pirates and the negotiation stage.

“The main reason I have written this book is that if any similar events happen, we will know what precautions we can take and what we can do,” he says.

Mr Roucou started to write the book in September 2009.

Captivating read
By Andrea Hampton
I picked this book up while in the Seychelles over Christmas and found it very revealing in terms of the driving forces behind piracy in Somalia and the desperate psyche of its people driven to extremes. Captain Francis does a commendable job in storytelling and provides a great guide on how to act during a hostage situation by never assuming the role of the victim but one of a strong negotiator with little or no bargaining chips.

Epic story
By Boris
Having spent time on the Indian Ocean Explorer it was a riveting theory to read. The crew as I remember them were all such humble men who had a typically positive Creole view on life. The story is one of harrowing hardship and it I'd indeed sad to read what they had to endure at the hands of a band of criminals.

Interesting - but not well written
By CraigP
This provides an interesting insight into a very real problem - it may not be that well written, but hey - it was written by the captian of a tourist vessel, not a professional writer. It is still worth persisting with.

Not Impressed
By RedWell
I assigned this book because it is less expensive than many of the dry tomes offered on this topic. It also offers an impressive array of well-known scholars on US foreign policy. Ideally, it offers a good overview of the history, themes, social science, debates and strategies from competing perspectives. Students will be forced to consider different views and how those are built into the analyses before them. Further, the book divides its topic in sensible ways and offers some material on every major subtopic in this field.

In reality, the material does not add up to a clear view of American foreign policy and the chapters remain overly abstract. There is no chapter appendix or some other resource to view the overall context and institutionalization of US foreign policy. Readers must come to the book with a solid understanding of the mechanics and basics of US foreign policy if they are to make sense of the commentaries. And indeed, the chapters read more like commentaries or, at their best, articles in "Foreign Affairs." Despite offering a solid list of scholars, the book seems to demand of them only that they give an overview of their already very large theories. In other words, the details of how these scholars reached their conclusions are lost. What appears, instead, are a series of stylized arguments. Remarkably, this is useful for neither the new student nor the old hand (or a graduate student): the material is too generalized and at too high a level of discussion to help rookies, but it is too familiar and simplified to be of use for a more advanced reader. The chapter by Joseph Nye is particularly egregious. It simply restates his theory of hard/soft/smart power and offers only a loose application to the Obama administration based not on systematic research but anecdotal highlights familiar to any intelligent consumer of national media.

Overall, the book reflects a larger problem in the academic discipline of International Relations: dominance by big theories that, when applied to specific cases, bulldoze details and oversimplify or abstract serious political problems. The authors marshaled an impressive set of authors, and any given chapter can be a useful overview of an important topic; however, in the end, the book leaves an impressionistic view of US foreign policy inappropriate for the both the new student and the old hand.

A bit of a dry read, but if you need it for class, then you need it. Ended up not reading a bunch of it. Returning was simple though. Enjoyed that process.

Dante's Divine Comedy, by Seymour Chwast

The "left-handed designer," Seymour Chwast has been putting his unparalleled take-and influence-on the world of illustration and design for the last half century. In his version of Dante's Divine Comedy, Chwast's first graphic novel, Dante and his guide Virgil don fedoras and wander through noir-ish realms of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, finding both the wicked and the wondrous on their way.

Dante Alighieri wrote his epic poem The Divine Comedy from 1308 to 1321 while in exile from his native Florence. In the work's three parts (Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise), Dante chronicles his travels throughthe afterlife, cataloging a multitude of sinners and saints-many of them real people to whom Dante tellingly assigned either horrible punishment or indescribable pleasure-and eventually meeting both God and Lucifer face-to-face.

In his adaptation of this skewering satire, Chwast creates a visual fantasia that fascinates on every page: From the multifarious torments of the Inferno to the host of delights in Paradise, his inventive illustrations capture the delirious complexity of this classic of the Western canon.

Second circle of Hell Sins of the flesh The three furies Sixth circle of Hell

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Famed artist and graphic designer Chwast has turned his talents to the graphic novel form for the first time, and we can all be happy about it. In a highly compressed version of Dante's Divine Comedy, Chwast takes us on a whirlwind tour of hell, purgatory, and heaven. With his signature mix of humor, artistry, and high-level design, he conveys a breathtaking amount of information in clear black and white line drawings. One graph illustrates "reasons for different levels of punishment," with sins ranging from "no self-control" (deemed "not so bad") to "insane brutality" (which is "terrible"). In another, the levels and regions of purgatory are laid out in an ascending birthday cake format. Much of the book is beautiful, with page design showing naked sinners tossed in a wind of words, a two-page spread of men and snakes wrapped in writhing battle, or a large flower made of angels as they fly from God. Dante himself is portrayed as a pipe-smoking detective type in sunglasses and a trench coat, while his guide, Virgil, wears a porkpie hat and wire-rimmed spectacles with his suit. It all works seamlessly as Chwast does a stunning job of telling Dante's story in his own brilliant style.

From Booklist
Although legendary graphic designer and illustrator Chwast is pushing 80, he is still seeking new fields to conquer. For his first graphic novel, he tackles no less daunting a task than adapting Dante’s epic poem into comics format. Chwast hews closely to the original: guided by the Roman poet Virgil, the narrator travels through the circles of hell, meets Lucifer, traverses purgatory, and goes through the spheres of heaven before coming face-to-face with God himself. What Chwast contributes to the tale is an off-kilter, anachronistic approach—Dante is a pipe-smoking mug in a trench coat and shades, and Virgil sports a derby and cane—and, most of all, his distinctively simple, whimsically blunt drawing style and elegantly economical sense of design and composition, which makes each page its own visual treat. Chwast’s straightforward version holds wide appeal for readers wanting an experience less demanding than Dante’s original—it’s a Classics Illustrated with genuine panache—as well as grown-up fans of the 30-plus children’s books that Chwast has designed and illustrated over the years. --Gordon Flagg

More for fans of Chwast's art than of Dante's writing
By Aaron Silverman
As a collection of drawings by an iconic illustrator, this is a great book. Granted, Chwast isn't for everyone, but fans will eat this up. As an adaptation of the Divine Comedy, well, it's OK but slight. Chwast's simple, straightforward black and white line drawings provide visual interpretations of the sights described by Dante, but much of the literary value of the work is lost. References to historical characters and their fates are brief at best. It's more like a simple travelogue. I was hoping for much more detail -- this is basically a quick synopsis. So while I didn't get much of the substance of the Divine Comedy from this, I did enjoy it as an art book.

As a longtime Chwast fan, I can't resist.
By Jim
I've been a fan of Seymour Chwast's illustration and design since the late sixties, which is when I started studying illustration and design at The School of Visual Arts in NYC. At that time, Push Pin Studios (today the Pushpin Group), which Chwast founded in 1954 with acclaimed graphic designer Milton Glaser, was right around the corner from the school, and I once came this close to getting into a night class taught by Chwast.

As a longtime fan of "the left-handed designer" (I too am left-handed), I find Chwast's graphic, black & white adaptation of Dante's Divine Comedy irresistible. It is funny and I laughed out loud several times when reading it. And it is also poignant; I had tears in my eyes when I read the final words about "the love that moves the sun and other stars." One can read the Divine Comedy from a religious or a secular perspective, and from the latter perspective and perhaps the former as well, it can be read as a story about the human condition. For me, the lightheartedness of Chwast's illustrations serve to offset rather than undermine the gravity of the story (if read as a story about the human condition).

This book will certainly be of interest to other fans of Chwast's work, and I think it would make a nice gift for anyone who is interested in (and/or creates) humorous illustration. Do note that as I mention above, the book is in black & white; only the covers are in color.

Cliff Notes Dante with Notebook Doodle Illustrations
By Monty Moonlight
Chwast's version of Dante's Divine Comedy is certainly not going to be for everyone. This graphic novel version is, naturally, more about the illustrations than the text, and this is a very not-too-wordy take. What we get is the poet Dante's journey through the afterlife with his spirit guides, the basic story intact, but only the most simplistic dialogue and narration. Still, this manages to be confusing at times in part by Chwast's choice to dress the characters as though they are from the 20th Century. In my opinion, the medieval man's point of view of a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise is bizarre enough, even when the dialogue is thoroughly dumbed down, without the need for making it more confusing by illustrating a flashback to the crusades with Sherman tanks and WWII soldiers. Well, that's just my opinion. It's still easy to follow and probably easier to understand than the original work, and though it's 127 pages (black and white), it's a VERY quick read. My biggest disappointment is with the art, and I shudder to go into this, being a much less successful cartoonist/illustrator myself. The art here is consistent, which is tricky no matter what your style, but the style itself, I don't know how to put it except to say it looks like a kid drew the whole thing. I look back on the first graphic novel I illustrated, and as much as I hate to see that crude example of my early work (and as harsh as I am on my current work), one thing I can say about the art here is that it really makes me feel good about my poorest creations and gives me hope for the future, when it doesn't flat out make me mad that I so rarely land a paying gig while this stuff sells.

At any rate, if you are in the market for a simple version of Dante's Divine Comedy, this is... an option. I can't say it's the best option. It may well be, but I don't know what else is out there for that. Look into what his, and keep this one in mind since it may be the simplest version out there, but don't be surprised at the underwhelming feeling you get when you receive your copy and open it up.

Far Horizons: Across the Great Divide, by Andrew Earnshaw

Stalked by a black bear, experiencing a close shave with a bull buffalo, having his tent eaten by an elk and being mugged by a gang of racoons; these are just a few of the adventures Andrew Earnshaw faces in his gentle trip around North America by motorcycle. But will he survive intact when he finally comes face to face with that most dangerous of animals: the Canadian Sunday afternoon driver? Far Horizons is a personal and light-hearted account of an attempt to circumnavigate the back roads of North America by motorcycle. Andrew's engaging narrative will draw you in - and you'll ride every mile of the trip with him. From describing the minimal planning that took place and the doubts that hit once the journey began, to finding his motorcycle impounded by US Customs, Andrew's tale takes us on a classic road trip. He delves down the Appalachians into Alabama, meets kindred spirits from the biking world and warms mile by mile into a deep appreciation of the splendour of the landscape and the friendliness of the inhabitants. As he travels through the First Nation reservations, he looks into the history surrounding the demise of the Great Plains culture, describes the victory of the Sioux at Little Bighorn and the massacre at Wounded Knee, meeting descendants of those involved. The book is light-hearted and written in the spirit of gentle adventure by someone who admits to being a 'pretty slow rider' and a navigational incompetent to boot. If he manages to get back to Baltimore it will be a small miracle and hopefully, by the time he gets there, he will have finally found out what the 'Great Divide' really is.

So there I was hiking through the Galapagos Island's on my Honeymoon and all I could think about was where can I find a place to sit down and continue reading 'Far Horizons'.
I'm actually serious..
Like many of those born in the Y Generation, I have a rather short attention span and reading a book that's over 500 pages seems like the impossible but I must admit, I was sad when I turned to the last page, I wanted more.

I've read every motorcycle travel book i could get my hands on and I must say, this is the best one i've read yet!!
The writing style has an amazing flow to it and it has great storytelling. Its a great read and I want more!

101 on Post-colonial Theory
By M. Hartenthal
This book should be the required reading for anyone starting to familiarize with post-colonial theory. I would highly recommend it to undergrad students. It's a short book and should be read cover to cover, as it gives you a good grasp on the development of the theory.
