About the Author

Arnoud Arntz is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Experimental Psychopathology at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. He is Scientific Director of the University’s Research Center of Experimental Psychopathology. He studies psychological theories and therapies for anxiety and personality disorders, and is the principal investigator for a series of multicenter trials investigating the effectiveness of schema therapy for various personality disorders. He also practices CBT and schema therapy.

Gitta Jacob is a Clinical Psychologist, Cognitive and Schema Therapist in the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, University of Freiburg, Germany. She is a founding board member of the International Society for Schema Therapy, and a past Chair of the Working Group on Borderline Personality Disorders at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Freiburg.

In light of the current state of scholarship on children, the purpose of this book is threefold. First, Garroway continues to fill out the picture of the child in the ancient Near East by compiling child-centric texts and archaeological realia. In analyzing these materials, she surveys the relationship between children and ancient Near Eastern society by examining the extent to which structuring forces in a community, such as social status and gender, contribute to the process of a child's becoming a member of his household and society. Finally, this information provides a base for future research, for example, a cross-cultural study of children in the ancient Near East in Classical Antiquity.

Written in 1622 by William Rowley and Thomas Middleton, it is one of the most successful collaborations in the history of the theater.

About the Author

The editor, Michael Neill, is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Auckland. He has edited Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra and Othello for the Oxford Shakespeare as well as Selected Plays by John Marston and a volume of essays on John Ford.

One of the best tragedies ever

Anyone who thinks centuries-old tragedies aren't relevant to modern times should read "The Changeling." With a few very minor adjustments, the plot and characters in this play could come right out of a modern crime novel, or even a modern true-crime story.
This is one of those plays where you read because you're more interested about what happens to the bad guy (and the bad gal) than what happens to the good guys. (Alsemero who! ) I envy the performers who get to play DeFlores and Beatrice-Joanna.
A lot of scholarly treatises about the play criticized the humorous subplot, claiming that it had no relevance and no connection to the main plot. My response is, "Hell-o! Is anybody home?" OK, that wasn't a scholarly response, but any scholar who can't see the thematic connection (characters who mask their true natures versus characters in disguise) doesn't deserve a scholarly response.

MORALITY, MISUNDERSTOOD; PSYCHOLOGY, ITS MOST DISTURBED

Firstly, thanks to Joost Daadler for his stunning introduction to the edition I read of 'The Changeling'. The in-depth analysis of the psychological disturbances and functions that exist within the play (such as the ID and the unconscious dropping of the glove, etc.), help expand 'The Changeling' into a lot more than just (though this would be no bad thing!) a morality play where an orthodox Christian message runs predominant. I have never read a play that reduces the human to the bestial in such an intense and forceful manner, not shying away from the painful and somewhat humiliating view that human kind are more or less governed by their instincts; sexual impulse being one such motivating factor that can rid a human of any intellect ot reason that is supposed to constitute 'humanity' in the first place. This ia must read and not just a moral, didactic play either. It is not condemning sexuality but pleading with us that it must be understood. Overall, it is a tragedy that really challenges its reader into thinking hard about whether certain characters (e.g. Beatrice) can be more sympathised with than maybe one thought upon first reading. Read it!

Ah, watch the madness unfold; who is The Changeling?

Madness--how many kinds were there? How many people are changelings in their world? Beatrice, focusing only on what she wants--does she really know what she wants? De Flores, who like many just focuses on himself... As Euripides for the Greeks is close to the modern mind, so are Middleton and Rowley for the Renaissance. You will find that you connect to the pivotal characters like those you know, so well are they drawn. The play itself is striking, and keep an eye on the subplot; note how it underscores the madness with its contrast to the main plot.
The New Mermaids is the best edition I've found! I highly recommend this edition of the play, whether new to Renaissance drama or scholar. The footnotes are exceptional--even my professor was astonished and pleased. They make you understand quite clearly that "nunnery" wasn't the only sexual ambiguity of interest! (And why certain characters react to words we find innocuous.)
It is a tragedy of people oblivious to others... A very good example of Renaissance drama, and one that sticks in your mind.

Lorenzo Vidino is a fellow with the International Security Program's Initiative on Religion in International Affairs at the Belfer Center, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He is also a Peace Scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace and author of the first book on al Qaeda in Europe, Al Qaeda in Europe: The New Battleground of Global Jihad. Vidino holds a law degree from the University of Milan Law School and a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Best and complete account of the Brotherhood

No written work comes close to what Vidino has accomplished with this landmark book. This is, without a doubt, the most complete and reasonable account of what may be the world's most important movement - the Muslim Brotherhood. Unlike other academics and commentators who focus solely on the Middle East, Vidino takes a hard look at the movement's activities in the West that manages to be both investigative and scholarly. The amount of original, primary research in this book is impressive. And, as the other reviewer noted, he does all this without being (a) an apologist or (b) a right-wing fanatic - the two categories of people who seem to do all the talking and writing about the Brotherhood in the West these days.

Aside from the information and analysis itself, Vidino's work is elegantly written. Each chapter is substantial enough to stand alone, but they also integrate effectively as a whole.

Important title on a topical subject

In a clearly written volume, marshalling a wealth of evidence presented logically and parsimoniously, Lorenzo Vidino traces the rise of Brotherhood offshoots in Western Europe and North America. While enjoying operational independence from the Middle East, the New Brothers in the West share historical, financial, personal, organizational, and ideological ties to the parent structure. They have fostered a strong Islamic identity among the growing Muslim community in the West and gained acceptance as representatives of local Muslim communities in their dealing with the Western governments. These aims have been pursued in spite of their dogmatic flexibility, which allows the Brothers to use different, even contradictory, discourses for different audiences, and the fact that their membership accounts for only a small fraction of Western Muslim communities and no democratic mechanism allowed those communities to appoint them as portavoce. The volume discusses Great Britain, Germany, and the United States, documenting the activities of the Brotherhood in these countries, together with their relationships with these governments and other Muslim organizations. Case studies of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands would have mapped more thoroughly the work of Brotherhood offshoots in Europe, as all these countries are different to some degree so that the reasons why only three cases were selected remain understated. The discussion of the Brotherhood's acceptance of violence is particularly useful, highlighting the fact that, although the organization has consistently denounced terrorism, its condemnations have not been unconditional. Indeed, the Brotherhood declared that the acts of those who resist an occupation "are justified both morally and under Islamic law" (211), an argument that applies to Palestine, Chechnya, Kashmir, and Iraq. Vidino proposes "a policy of cautious and informed engagement" (225) as the most appropriate course of action for Western governments. Filling a gap by examining an understudied topic of relevance for the post-9/11 world, this volume is a key addition to the literature and a must read for students, academics and practitioners who are interested in understanding an organization that has assumed the role of spokesperson for the ever growing Western Muslim community.

AMAZING and POWERFUL

AMAZING and POWERFUL information. I have been doing healing work with Carol and as a result I am system free of Ulcerative Colitis and Grief.
Now there is finally tools to invest in myself to continue the healing and a deeper understanding of the Life Weaving healing. I also have experienced just by connecting with reading the books and charts the healing is integrating deeper as a result of the energy of the channeled information. If you are looking for a book with revolutionary concepts leave it but if you are looking for a sort of drums encyclopedia ..O'Mahoney did it for you! Almost every aspect of the drumming has covered, maybe not in depht ( the title tells no lies) but each lesson is a very good start point with very useful introduction ( I appreciated it a lot). Being O'Mahoney a jazz drummer the jazz section seems to be the most accurate but I think every drummer could appreciate it (Blast Beats ? Three lessons!). The CD contains 318 (!!) tracks including play along. I love this book.

An outstanding overview of drumset playing styles

This book gives you an terrific overview of drumset styles and how they fit with different genres of music. The author explains the essence of each style & genre, and then shows beginning, intermediate, and advanced examples of how to play in that style. He also uses a plain English approach to explaining about playing ahead or behind the beat, how to construct your own drum parts, soloing, etc. This is a book you'll come back to often as you take the journey of playing drumset. It is not meant to be a tour of cutting edge interpretations of styles, but rather a great overview of what makes different music genres sound the way they do -- and how drums support that genre. Very useful.

The best drum book for any drummer. This book contains thorough descriptions of styles, well defined musical terminology and covers many topics within the drumming realm including many new innovative techniques (Blast beats etc) all packaged in one wonderful compendium. A "must have" for any drummer's collection-one of the best new books out there. This book was a lucky "find' for me as I had never heard of it and when I saw the copyright, I learned that is had just come out on the market in 2014. I would highly recommend this book above many books on the market because it is so wholly comprehensive.

Silapadikaram is a classic. If you are into Tamil drama/Bharatanatyam scene, you will know the story. This is a great translation and unlike others which are prose centric, this book is in a poetic form and is apt for lovers of the book. Good font, well researched.

A different sort of epic

I was astonished reading this epic of south India. The rich description of lives so long ago, the music, the food, the flowers, the details were magnificent. I liked the tale as well...not of wars and male dominance like so many other culture's stories. I think Kovalan's affair was pretty unexcusable, but certainly right in line with the antics of contemporary powerful men, but Kannaki is terrific, and the tale so very rich and fascinating.

It was okay....but with such a great story to work with, this is really not an effort that is worth anywhere near the price they are charging. I'd say skip it and go read the story on Wikipedia.
