About the Author

Rebecca Donatelle is an Associate Professor in Public Health and is the Coordinator of the Public Health Promotion and Education Programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She has a Ph.D. in Community Health/Health Education, a Master of Science degree in Health Education, and a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in both Health/Physical Education and English. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist in behaviors and behavior change. She has received the Leadership Award, outstanding teacher award in her college, and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Presidential Award for Promising New Research in the Smoke-Free Families National Initiative.

During a tragically short career, Richard Caton Woodville (1825–1855) produced iconic works depicting mid-century America. Born in Baltimore and trained in D�sseldorf, Woodville painted 19th-century America in a new way. Chocolate-Peanut Butter Brownies

¾ cup (1½  sticks) unsalted butter
8 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped into small pieces
4 large eggs
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips
 
Makes 16 brownies
 
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, extending it up and over the sides on 2 sides.

Select a saucepan and a heatproof bowl that fits snugly on top of the pan. Fill the pan one-third full of water, making sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl. Ask an adult to help you place the saucepan over medium heat. When the water is steaming, place the bowl on top of the saucepan and add the butter and chocolate to the bowl. Heat, stirring with a rubber spatula, until the mixture is melted and smooth, about 5 minutes. Don’t let the chocolate get too hot! Ask an adult to help you remove the bowl from the saucepan (the bowl will be hot!) and set aside to cool slightly.

In a bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the eggs on medium speed until pale, about 4 minutes. Add the sugar and vanilla and beat until well combined. Turn off the mixer. Add the chocolate and beat until blended. Turn off the mixer and scrape down the bowl with a rubber spatula. Stir in the flour and salt with the rubber spatula just until blended.

Scrape the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Using a tablespoon measure, drop 6 dollops of peanut butter over the top, spacing them evenly. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean (ask an adult for help!), 25 to 30 minutes. Ask an adult to help you remove the pan from the oven and put it on a wire rack. Let cool completely, then cut into 16 squares and serve.

I can't say enough about this cookbook. It's wonderful for beginning bakers. My 7 year old has made four of the recipes all on her own thus far. They aren't super simple recipes - but are written for young bakers with developing skills. Everything has been delicious!

This is a very nice baking book. My daughter bought it with her own money, and the recipes are simple and tasty. The book has a lot of beautiful photos, almost every recipe has a photo, I think I saw two that didn't. I was skeptical, thinking it would be another terrible kids cooking book that just uses cake mix boxes and packaged candy to decorate-but it's not. Excellent book, buying another one as a gift for a niece. It's hardcover, 96 pages

Indulged yet also neglected as a child, Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) was prepared for leadership by her proud, expansive father, Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister. Jayakar, biographer of Krishnamurti, is especially revealing on Indira's unhappy marriage to Feroze Gandhi, on her key role in freeing East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) from West Pakistan's bloody rule and on her relationship with her sons Sanjay, killed in a plane crash in 1980, and Rajiv, assassinated in 1991. Noted Indian intellectual Jayakar knew Gandhi for over 30 years, and his numerous interviews, discussions, and interactions with her help shape this biography. One of the first women to govern a major country, Gandhi belonged to a family that has ruled India for most of its recent history; she herself was the daughter of a prime minister and was succeeded as prime minister by her son after her assassination in 1984. Significantly, Jayakar moves away from the earlier paeans of praise to a more critical assessment of Gandhi's contributions to the Indian polity. The 1975-77 Emergency and subsequent events are not treated with the same depth as the earlier period of Gandhi's career, but this will unquestionably become one of the standard biographies.

Gandhi shared some of her earliest memories with Jayakar: her love of climbing trees and hiding among the leaves and her sense of "fierce responsibility" when her grandfather was arrested for his role in instigating India's struggle for independence. Jayakar's access to Gandhi at crucial turning points in Gandhi's tumultuous life enabled her to recognize and articulate the subtler aspects of Gandhi's complex relationships with her powerful father, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru; her neglected, sickly, and religiously inclined mother; her philandering husband, Feroze Gandhi; and her two sons who, like Gandhi herself, came to violent ends. As Jayakar examines Gandhi's astonishing life, she reveals how adept Gandhi became at internalizing and concealing her fears, wielding meaningful silences as a negotiating tool, and ignoring flattery. Optimality Conditions in Convex Optimization explores an important and central issue in the field of convex optimization: optimality conditions. It brings together the most important and recent results in this area that have been scattered in the literature―notably in the area of convex analysis―essential in developing many of the important results in this book, and not usually found in conventional texts. Unlike other books on convex optimization, which usually discuss algorithms along with some basic theory, the sole focus of this book is on fundamental and advanced convex optimization theory.

Although many results presented in the book can also be proved in infinite dimensions, the authors focus on finite dimensions to allow for much deeper results and a better understanding of the structures involved in a convex optimization problem. They address semi-infinite optimization problems; approximate solution concepts of convex optimization problems; and some classes of non-convex problems which can be studied using the tools of convex analysis. They include examples wherever needed, provide details of major results, and discuss proofs of the main results.

About the Author

Anulekha Dhara earned her Ph.d. in IIT Delhi and subsequently moved to IIT Kanpur for her post-doctoral studies. Currently, she is a post-doctoral fellow in Mathematics at the University of Avignon, France. Her main area of interest is optimization theory.

Joydeep Dutta is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Kanpur. His main area of interest is optimization theory and applications.

A Helpful Book to Advanced Learners

Readers need lots of vocabulary, but in learning to use that vocabulary, they will gain understanding of the nonsensical side or English. So useful to be able to just pick up a used copy too. Beyond idioms, I think the author sneaks in some very useful phrases too. Be careful, though to check up on understanding the vocabulary. Useless if you don't know the words.
