About the Author
Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia, 1963; Ph.D. Columbia, 1966) is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968. �In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and the state of Michigan. �In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan. �Professor Kottak has done fieldwork in cultural anthropology in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. In current research projects, Kottak and his colleagues have investigated the emergence of ecological awareness in Brazil, the social context of deforestation in Madagascar, and popular participation in economic development planning in northeastern Brazil.

This is TRULY a Concise Intro to Anthro!

This is without a doubt the MOST CONCISE introductory anthropology textbook I have ever seen. That, in itself, makes it worthy of four stars. It would have gotten five stars if it had been better edited because there is STILL a lot of excess verbiage in this book. Dr. Kottak is an interesting fellow, and his research sounds like it has contributed some very important anthropological findings to the field, BUT he has a habit of throwing it bits of information about his work where the info is neither relevant nor helpful. Also, some of the most important concepts are given short shrift while the most minimally important topics are given PAGES. It can make sorting the relative importance of topics rather difficult, not to mention the problems of understanding the important topics that have been glossed over in 2-3 sentences as if everyone should already know them. That said, the book is easy to read, and I LOVE that I could rent it at such a reasonable cost.

Based on papers originally presented at an international conference held at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China (PRC), this book provides an up-to-date, comprehensive, and authoritative assessment of the PRC's political, economic, social, ethnic, energy, security, military, diplomatic and other developments and challenges today.

Contributed by scholars and experts in political science, international relations, economics, public administration, history, mass communication, psychology, and diplomacy, the book focuses on the efforts needed by China to grow in a sustainable manner and to become a respected global power. About the Author
Dr. Zhiqun Zhu is John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Chair in East Asian Politics and Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. His teaching and research interests focus on Chinese politics, Chinese foreign policy, East Asian political economy, and US-China relations.

His recent book publications include "China s New Diplomacy: Rationale, Strategies and Significance" (Ashgate 2010); "The People s Republic of China Today: Internal and External Challenges" [ed.] (World Scientific Publishing, 2010); "Understanding East Asia s Economic Miracles "(Association for Asian Studies, 2009); and "US-China Relations in the 21st Century: Power Transition and Peace" (Routledge, 2006).

“Tsering Wangmo Dhompa is a poet who straddles several worlds and languages. In Coming Home to Tibet, she writes beautifully of her life, her family, Tibet’s astonishing landscape, and the tragedy of its contemporary political situation. As a Tibetan, Dhompa sees the traditional culture of her homeland lovingly. As a Westerner, she sees its shortcomings. So this book is a blessing for those of us interested in Tibet: it paints a sensitive and detailed portrait, from the inside, that is both critical and sympathetic.

As a Buddhist concerned about transmission of the tradition to the West, Coming Home to Tibet gave me a lot to think about. To what extent is Buddhism, as Western adherents generally see it, a psychology and philosophy divorced from its cultural moorings—and to what extent do we fundamentally misunderstand Buddhism when we look at it that way? And in that misunderstanding, do we lose a great deal of the goodness Buddhism might offer us? Dhompa does not engage such questions abstractly: her personal reflections, as an educated Tibetan Westerner, provide more powerful food for thought about this question than any theoretical discussion could.

About the Author
TSERING WANGMO DHOMPA is the first Tibetan female poet to be published in English. Her first book of poems, Rules of the House (Apogee Press, 2002) was a finalist for the Asian American Literary Awards in 2003. She was raised in India and Nepal and is fluent in several languages and dialects--including Tibetan, Hindi, and Nepali. Tsering received her BA from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, her MA from University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and her MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State. Her poetry articulates the nostalgia of displaced Tibetans, recording the memories of elders in Tibetan communities.

I have read many scholarly works on Tibet and I have to say that I learned more from your book than all of them combined. So many passages had me laughing out loud or with tears in my eyes. Thank you Tsering for sharing your family with us.
