          A must-have Lighting book
          By Kiyo M.
I also have the Lighting for Digital Video and Television, Third Edition book (also a Focal Press release), which seemed more like a book geared more towards students; I was hoping for something a little more professional and this book is exactly what I was looking for focusing on lighting. It is very descriptive and technical from what each lighting crew is responsible and the equipments. It is also helpful explaining in detail of how a cinematographer decides on the lighting and the necessary involvement of the crews for each other; not just a simple generic description of it.

It is like the The Filmmaker's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age, but focused all on lighting. I can see that this book won't just benefit filmmakers/gaffers but anyone interested in electrical components.

I definitely recommend for anyone interested in filmmaking/gaffer/cinematographer. This is a must-have for lighting. I really wish I had this book sooner when I had to be the cinematographer for a Super 16mm student short film.

A must read for ETCP Electrical Test
          By Gary J. Sleeman
Although this book is basically about Motion Picture production, the later electrical chapters are a must read to study for the ETCP Electrical Certification Test. Break-a-leg.

BEST BOOK ON THE TOPIC I HAVE READ

Set Lighting Technician's Handbook, Fourth Edition: Film Lighting Equipment, Practice, and Electrical Distribution

As any one who as read my reviews before knows I am into film making and love reading books on the subject. So when I was given the chance to learn more about the lighting process and read this book I jumped all over it. I had a decent amount of knowledge on lighting before but one can always learn more. So when this arrived in the mail I was ready to get to reading.

This is with out a doubt the best book I have read on lighting giving you everything you could ever want to know about it. From the equipment and what is best used for what all the way to how to use it. And the little intricacies that you wouldn't even think of are here. The book is easy to read to but like some of the other reviews have said you may not understand everything at first. That is fine, just keep reading and learning, because there was stuff here I had to reread.

Now this book does focus on film lighting mainly but trust me it will help in any setting and form of entertainment of photo shoot. Harry Box did an excellent job with this book going into every technical breakdown but he makes it an easy read. Also I must say that he even covers lighting techniques that you may have never even thought about. I will not give them away but I am sure when you read it you will know what I am talking about. I do recommend this book as it is the best on the subject I have ever read.

Troubleshoot problems and improve the performance of SQL Server queries by using Wait Statistics
          By Ian Stirk
          Hi,

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

This book aims to troubleshoot problems and improve the performance of SQL Server queries by using Wait Statistics, how does it fare?

When SQL code is not running on the CPU, SQL Server records the reason why it is not running (e.g. blocking or waiting for IO to complete). Analysing these Wait Statistics (Wait Stats), and making changes based on them, can improve the performance of your queries.

The book is targeted at DBAs and SQL developers who want to troubleshoot problems and improve the performance of their SQL Servers and queries. There are 771 types of Wait Stats in SQL Server 2014, and the most common ones are discussed here.

The book assumes little specific knowledge about SQL Server; however, an understanding will make the book easier to read. The book contains three chapters relating to the Wait Stats analysis method, and nine chapters on wait types relating to specific areas of processing.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Part I Foundations of Wait Statistics Analysis

          Chapter 1 Wait Statistics Internals

This chapter opens with a discussion on what Wait Stats are: they indicate why SQL code is not running on the CPUs. They are not well-known to DBAs or developers. A brief history of Wait Stats is given, having existed in earlier versions of SQL Server, they became more usable with the advent of Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) in SQL Server 2005.

The chapter continues with a look at SQLOS, which provides operating system (OS) functionality, allowing SQL Server to take advantage of hardware improvements. Next, schedulers, tasks, and worker threads are discussed, and their work illustrated with the use of DMVs.

The chapter ends with a look at Wait Stats and how they relate to the various queues (i.e. running, runnable, and waiter list). The movement of queries between the queues is shown with examples.

This chapter provides a useful overview of what Wait Stats are, together with the SQL Server OS architecture, and the flow between sessions, requests, tasks and threads. There’s a reference to Tom Davidson’s helpful paper “SQL Server 2005 Waits and Queues” - which is still applicable today.

I don’t agree with everything that’s said. The technique is not new, indeed Davidson’s related paper dates from 2006. Additionally, people that deal with performance tuning will be very familiar with Wait Stats, it’s a well-known tuning technique.

This chapter contains well written discussions, helpful references to websites, inter-chapter links, example SQL code to support the assertions, useful diagrams, outputs, and practical instructions. These traits apply to the book as a whole.
          .
          .
          .
          Conclusion

This book contains well-written discussions, useful examples, SQL code, diagrams, website links, and inter-chapter links. It contains plenty of detailed information to help you troubleshoot your problems, and offers useful suggestions for solutions.

The book describes what Wait Stats are, how they can be recorded as a baseline, and how this baseline can be used to identify problems. The larger part of the book can be used as a reference, for you to decode your wait types, understand what they are, and how the wait type metrics can be lowered. You’re sure to learn a lot about the internal working of SQL Server from this book.

Sometimes, things are not how they initially seem e.g. high IO values might not mean the IO subsystem is slow, it might be there isn’t enough memory on the server. So, I would have liked to have seen a more corroborative approach between various tuning techniques (e.g. Davidson links Wait Stats with Perfmon queue metrics). Also, I felt sometimes there was too much hyperbole (e.g. Wait Stats is a relatively little used technique, and worthless without a baseline).

Despite these reservations, I enjoyed this book immensely, it contains lots of useful detail. It is certainly the next thing to read after Davidson’s paper on SQL Server 2005 Waits and Queues (available for free at: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966413.aspx). The book is highly recommended.

Living Up to Death, by Paul Ricoeur

When French philosopher Paul Ricoeur died in 2005, he bequeathed to the world a highly regarded, widely influential body of work which established him as one of the greatest thinkers of our time. He also left behind a number of unfinished projects that are gathered here and translated into English for the first time.

Living Up to Death consists of one major essay and nine fragments. Composed in 1996, the essay is the kernel of an unrealized book on the subject of mortality. Likely inspired by his wife’s approaching death, it examines not one’s own passing but one’s experience of others dying. Ricoeur notes that when thinking about death the imagination is paramount, since we cannot truly experience our own passing. But those we leave behind do, and Ricoeur posits that the idea of life after death originated in the awareness of our own end posthumously resonating with our survivors.

The fragments in this volume were written over the course of the last few months of Ricoeur’s life as his health failed, and they represent his very last work. They cover a range of topics, touching on biblical scholarship, the philosophy of language, and the idea of selfhood he first addressed in Oneself as Another. And while they contain numerous philosophical insights, these fragments are perhaps most significant for providing an invaluable look at Ricoeur’s mind at work.

As poignant as it is perceptive, Living Up to Death is a moving testimony to Ricoeur’s willingness to confront his own mortality with serious questions, a touching insouciance, and hope for the future.

I discovered Ricoeur through other books that were quoting him and started reading his books. Perhaps, he's one of the best philosophers of twentieth century that his thoughts will apply to our society for ever.

          Ghosts in the Fog
By Mundie Moms & Mundie Kids Book Reviews
Having a grandfather who was a POW of WWII, I grew up with hearing a lot of stories about the war, and that fueled my desire to learn more about the war the older I got. I was really quite shocked when I sat down to read this book, as I hadn't heard anything about Japan's invasion in Alaska during June of 1942 through August of 1943. Quite honestly it made me angry to learn that this invasion could have been voided, and also was covered up by our own country. I thought Samantha Seiple's account of the invasion, and what happened before, during and after this time was well done. I felt she did a great job showing all sides of this story not only from personal accounts, but all recorded accounts as well.

War is not pretty, and often times the enemy is viewed as this horrid monster, but what I found fascinating from some of Seiple's personal accounts that were used in the story is some of the guys on both sides of this war knew each other, and went to school together. Even more surprising is that two of the men who fought against each other ended up becoming friends after the war. While this invasion took lives, and virtually wiped out villages, there were people who arose about the horrible circumstances they were placed in and forgave those who did them wrong. Not only that, Seiple humanized those who fought for Japan, and allowed me to realize that just like some of those who fought for the US, there were man who were forced to fight for Japan, that did not believe in the war.

Those that survived during this time were resilient, courageous American men, and women who did what they had to do to live. I am shocked over what some of them had to endure, not just as the hands of the Japanese, but the brutal elements as well. The heart of this story is of course those Americans who one, didn't know what was happening when the Japanese invaded their islands on the days of June 3rd- 6th, and who virtually had no help from the outside, since the government at that time didn't want the word to get out that Japan had in fact invaded the US. The accounts of those who survived this ordeal are amazing. Their will to survive and sacrifices to save their families, their home and country are amazing.

Sadly it took 15 months for the US to win back the Alaskan islands of Kiska and Attu. Many lives were lost, and homes destroyed. What were once peaceful villages and beautiful islands where decorated with blood shed, fires and bombings.

I felt that Samantha did an amazing job on educating me about this invasion. It was evident to me that she did a lot of in-depth research in order to tell this story for all sides. As a reader, I liked that she was able to make this personal to me by introducing to me a new person during each chapter of this book by given their account from the war, and how their role tied into this invasion. Samantha's use of personal stories, in-depth research, historical records, maps, photographs brought out a wide arranges of emotions for me while I read this harrowing account of the war. Samantha didn't miss a beat with her vivid and often times, harsh descriptions of what the Japanese soldiers did to their American captives, the cruel, and often times unbearable Aleutian weather, how American POW's were treated and the bloody battle that ended Japan's invasion. Not to mention how America ended the war.

Over all this is a story I'd recommend to those who are interested in learning more about WWII. This non-fiction story is educational and very informative. It's a well written, well researched book that gives a detailed account about an invasion that never should have happened, and the consequences that followed it years and years later not just for American's, but for those in Japan and through out the world.

A Riveting Account of Forgotten Bit of WWII History
          By Betsy Jennings
I was amazed that I'd never heard about this bit of history-- that a U.S. state was occupied by the Japanese during WWII. Did you know that?! Samantha Seiple does a great job at making the history come alive. I found her accounts of the Alaskan citizens who were taken prisoner during this time to be especially riveting... and her account of the battles that took place across Alaska's tough terrain. Overall, a really great read. It's listed for Young Adults and would make a perfect book for a High School history class-- or for anyone, of any age, who is interested in WWII history.

          A heart-breaking story powerfully told.
          By Heidi Grange
I had no idea that Alaska was invaded by the Japanese during World War II until I heard about this book. I was aware that the weather up there is pretty harsh and just getting to some of the Aleutian Islands is a challenge. I found the book both fascinating and heartbreaking. Books like this are a clear reminder that humans make some really foolish decisions sometimes, like ignoring intelligence that Alaska was a target of the Japanese. Decisions like sending the evacuees from the Aleutians to old abandoned villages that have fallen to pieces and not bothering to take care of them. Here are some things I learned from this book:

The value of maps (lives would have been saved if the U.S. troops had known what they were facing and where they were going)
The value of good intelligence (if the U.S. had had better intelligence and paid better attention to the intelligence they did have the whole thing could have been prevented)
How poorly the Aleuts were treated by both the Japanese and the United States, some of them spent three years in captivity in Japan, where over half of them died, the others were sent to old abandoned settlements that had no clean running water or electricity, where many of them got sick and died, reparations weren't made until the 1980s, to add insult to injury when some of the Aleuts got home they found their houses completely plundered by the American soldiers.

This is what good nonfiction does, opens the reader's eyes to things they didn't know or didn't fully understand. Seiple does a great job of this while making her account clear and easy to read. I highly recommend this one.

          From the Inside Flap
          Introduction

Today, the rate of technological change is rapidly accelerating. Organizations are faced with increasingly difficult decisions about their choices for hardware and Software platforms. Furthermore, increasing deregulation in many countries has forced companies into more aggressive deadlines and timescales to compete and survive. At present, object oriented technology is viewed as being able to deliver more reliable and better quality software, because it enables the building of more modular software by using well-defined interfaces and hiding implementation details. This can be seen in Table P-1, which shows the results of a survey of visitors to Object World UK in 1995.

According to Leach Lea95, the top reason shown in Table P-1 was also number one in 1993 and 1994.

The total worldwide sales of object-oriented development tools by US companies in 1995 were valued at US $1.3 Billion OOS96. A breakdown of the figures shows that object-oriented languages were the largest (US $440 Million), followed by application development environments (US $380 Million) and then object- oriented databases (US $218 Million).

Object-oriented languages are quite mature; Simula (the precursor to languages such as C++) has been in existence since the late 1960s. Other languages, such as Smalltalk, have also been used for several decades. On the analysis and design side, efforts are well underway through the Object Management Group (OMG) to develop a standard modeling language to communicate object-oriented designs. The need for a standard modeling language is analogous to Electrical Engineering's need for a standard notation to communicate electrical circuit designs. A standard notation will be understood by engineers wherever they were in the world.

Object databases, however, are still relatively rarely used in production LC96. The reason for this has been that a database is often at the core of many business processes within a company. Changing it can be difficult and expensive, as there may be many application dependencies. In contrast, applications can often be re- written in another language without affecting existing applications. An organization can also switch modeling languages and notions without affecting existing systems or application designs.

The Growth of Object Database Usage

Most of the major commercial object database products were developed towards the end of the 1980s and early 1990s. Many of them were built around object-oriented programming languages and had as their primary objective providing persistence for programming language objects. The computer-aided design vendors were early adopters of this technology. Previously, their approach was typically to store design objects in a relational database or to use some proprietary or flat file system. This approach often resulted in unsatisfactory performance. To retrieve design objects, for example, many database objects may have to be read and reassembled together in memory. For storage, the design objects would need to be flattened or decomposed to be manageable in conventional record or tuple structures. Some examples to illustrate these problems have been described by Loomis Loo95. Over the years, object database technology has become increasingly popular within other industry sectors as well. Evidence of this shift towards non-engineering applications has been reported in Lea95 and shown in Table P-2.

Additional evidence showing the shift to increasing mainstream commercial usage of object databases has been reported by Barry Bar97, based on a study of twenty-four organizations. Results of another survey of 700 Information Technology (IT) professionals in DBW97 showed that nearly 50 percent of respondents indicated that object-oriented databases were a technology area that their companies may use, with the Leisure, Transport, Retail, Healthcare, and Utility industries leading the interest.

The market for this technology has grown steadily over the last decade, although it still accounts for only a few percent of total sales of database products LC96. Part of the reason for this relatively slow market penetration is that the relational vendors have not totally ignored developments in object technology, and have begun to incorporate object features in their products. This is in stark contrast to the way that the hierarchical and network vendors ignored developments in relational technology several decades ago. Relational database usage grew fairly rapidly, because there was no apparent alternative for the capabilities offered by these products. Many companies are hesitant to move to a new data management technology Hod89 partly because there is only a limited experience base to leverage. It is the aim of this book to document examples that demonstrate the use of object database products to solve real-world problems.

This book brings together, for the first time, a large collection of papers that describe first-hand experiences with object database technology. Eighteen papers are presented in four categories:

          1.

          Systems Architecture

          2.

          Applications and Design

          3.

          Object Database Selection and Migration

          4.

Performance The papers include experiences with five of the major object database products: O2, GemStone, Objectivity/DB, ObjectStore, and VERSANT. The example applications are from a wide-range of domains, such as financial and scientific applications. We expect that this book will appeal to a wide audience, ranging from people who are just starting to look at object database technology to experience object database professionals.

Fair and Product independent user cases
          By Katsuya Oba
I found it fair and product-independent 18 user cases of Object Database. Some of user cases are not enough new, but they refers why they decided to use Object Database instead of common Relational Databases. Some even refers why they adopted a certain product of Object Database. Be careful this is not a introduction of Object Database. If you already have some knowledge of Object Database and are hesitating over which product to choose, this would be a helpful guide.

A look at some real world cases where the implementation of Object-Oriented database design worked well and was successful. A bit outdated, sometimes not too relevant to today's mixed use of both types of DB. A good read nonetheless.

          A Phenomenal Introduction to Egyptology
          By Jonathan Bailey
I cannot praise this book enough. Unfortunately in academic areas, introductions and overviews to various fields, particularly broad histories, tend to reflect the opinions and suppositions of the authors much more than render the actual environment they are working in. This book proves to be a rare exception to this sad fact and sets a standard of scholarship to be emulated by all researchers of the ancient world. Never in egyptology, assyriology, or biblical studies have I found a history that did such a wonderful job of laying out the textual and archaeological finds that scholars base their judgments upon. This is important to me, as I am in disagreement with many scholarly communities about issues of chronology. This book, rather than simply laying out tables and dates, supplements those tables with actual references to the texts and archaeological items that have lead scholars to date things the way they have, pointing out inconsistancies and uncertainties along the way.
After reading this book, I have become convinced that the history of Egypt is not as well known as most books on Egypt would have us believe.
The book is a mammoth undertaking, attempting to chronicle the history of Egypt from prehistory until 311 BC. Introductory sections on the state of research and certainty of chronolology are extremely enlightening. I was particularly impressed with the chapters on prehistory and the naqada culture, in which the archeological evidence and its interpretation were expressely explained to the reader, allowing the reader to agree or disagree with the authors as they wish. My only complaint is that the book, being an anthology of essays by a variety of scholars, shows some inconsistancy in its thoroughness. The chapter on the 18th dynasty reads a little like standard books on the subject, that is, the reader is kept from the evidence to support the author's view and the author seems to have trouble distinguishing his own suppositions from the facts of history, at times appearing a little tendentious.
Overall, this book is the best history of an ancient culture that I have yet read.

If you read one book about Ancient Egypt, read this one.
          By Nom de Guerre
As a quote expresses on the back of this book, "If you only want to read one book on Egypt, then read this one." Ian Shaw's history of ancient Egypt is a beautifully constructed volume that is at once densely packed with information and high in its level of scholarship, and aesthetically appealing and fairly accessible. The book surveys Egyptian history from 700,000 years before the present through the Roman period (ending in AD 395). This is an enormous task, and one might assume that the book could only be very summary and superficial in its treatment of each period. However, every member of Shaw's team of scholars manages to describe his or her period of expertise in a good amount of detail, discussing not only historical events but also art, religion, economics, and material culture. The book thus very successfully follows current trends in history of approaching periods from myriad points of view. Equally importantly, each author discusses the current problems and debates in the scholarship of his or her field. The multi-author approach allows the reader insight into the nature of research for each stage of Egyptian history: the reader gets a sense of the way in which research is conducted, the modes of analysis applied, and the style and terms of discussion. This book serves as an introduction to Egyptian historiography and to the nature of the study of ancient history almost as much as it serves as an introduction to ancient Egypt itself. Thus, The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt manages a high level of scholarship while remaining a useful survey of a huge span of time and culture. Readers who are unfamiliar with archaeological language might find some of the articles in this volume slightly more difficult than others, but there is a decent glossary in the back, and it is more the scholarly tone than the actual material that needs getting used to. Any reader who is genuinely interested in the topic will be able to read through this entire book without much trouble. My only reservation is this: the highly dense nature of the text means that it is occasionally a bit of a slow read. I read the book for a graduate class with Egyptologist David O'Connor (excavator of Abydos; you will see him mentioned several times in the book) and it took me about a week of constant focus. On the whole, though, this is a remarkable book and probably the best existing introduction to ancient Egypt. With a publication date of 2002, it is also the most up-to-date.

          Encyclopedic work
          By Neutiquam Erro
The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt is really more of an encyclopedia than a narrative history. Each of its 15 chapters is written by a different author, presumably an expert in the particular time period under study. This lends itself to a disjointed style as each author presents an overwhelming welter of archeological facts in an effort to deal with their own view of the controversies in the assigned area. While no doubt providing the experienced Egyptologist with fine details is important, the casual reader will find the book a dense and confusing read. The details of stone-age arrowhead manufacture or the various types of thrown pottery in the First Intermediate Period tend to obscure the bigger picture. As a prerequisite for reading this book I would recommend something lighter and more cohesive such as "A History of Ancient Egypt" by Grimal.

That said, the book is definitely a significant resource for anyone interested in Egyptian history. It covers the Egyptian state from prehistory through its incorporation into the Roman empire. Three chapters cover the pre-dynastic period including one on the Paleolithic period, one on the Naqada period and one entitled "Emergence of the Egyptian State" (Dynasties 0-2). Subsequent chapters for the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms (2 chapters for the last of these) and the Intermediate Periods follow. A rather strange and slightly redundant chapter, entitled "Egypt and the Outside World" is located just prior to the article on the Third Intermediate period. Its insertion here seems an afterthought as it covers the material of several preceding chapters using a topical, rather than chronologic, approach. Finally, several shorter chapters cover the Late Period, the Ptolemaic Period and the Roman Period. The book has a substantial further reading list and glossary as well as a tabular chronology, and index. It is well illustrated, with many black and white pictures, extensive maps and approximately 40 colour plates. Unfortunately, there is often a disconnect between the written material and the plates and pictures, leaving the reader confused as to their purpose.

I would definitely recommend this book as a scholarly or reference resource due to its detailed approach but I would suggest it not be the first book you read if you are a casual reader, interested in understanding the sweep of Egyptian history.

          Release, by Amelia Mangan

At the age of sixteen, Stanley Fitzgerald murdered his mother. He hasn't uttered a word since. Institutionalized for the last twelve years, he spends his days numb and unresponsive, shut away in a dismal, silent world of his own.

          Until he meets Marina.

Large bright feline eyes. Long chestnut hair. Rough edges of bitten fingernails. Hands that once murdered an entire family. Marina talks to Stanley. And before long, Stanley talks back.

As their friendship grows, Marina's influence draws Stanley out of his shell. The doctors, pleased with Stanley's progress, decide it's time for his release.

Returning to the isolated Midwestern farmhouse where he grew up, Stanley is determined to start putting the pieces of his broken life back together. He never believes he will see Marina again. Not as long as he lives.

Until, one black and rainy night, Marina appears on Stanley's doorstep.

"They let me out," she tells him.

Stanley wants so badly to believe her.

Stanley has no choice but to let her in...

RELEASE is a Gothic fairy tale of love, death, guilt, and madness.

And it will never let you go.

          Advance Praise for RELEASE:

"Reading Amelia Mangan’s Release is like being trapped in a slowly sinking ship while icy water rises all around you. It’s creepy, claustrophobic, and disturbingly vivid; I couldn’t put it down." —Kelly Braffet, author of Save Yourself and Josie and Jack

"Beautifully written and utterly absorbing, Release is the story of a young man trapped in an insular world of memories and madness. Returning to the rat-infested farmhouse where he grew up, Stanley Fitzgerald settles into a routine. He cooks, he cleans, he listens to the radio. One day fades into the next, but there is a certain comfort in the mundane. A certain hopefulness in the simplicity of his new existence. Then a beguiling young woman shows up at his door and Stanley soon realizes that for a man such as he, there can be only one release.

"Amelia Mangan’s writing is so rich and evocative, the reader will be tempted to race through the pages, but don’t. Release is to be savored, preferably on a moonlit night with a chill in the air." —Amanda Stevens, author of The Graveyard Queen series

"Haunting and hard to shake off. Release wraps its chilled fingers around you and doesn't let go." —Kathy Charles, author of John Belushi Is Dead

"Release is the novel you'd get if you put Stephen King and Angela Carter in a room together and got them good and mean drunk. Scary, thrilling, gimlet-eyed, and so sharp you could cut yourself on it, this is a triumph of horror novels, and heralds an exciting new talent in Amelia Mangan." —Jessica Alcott, author of Even When You Lie To Me

          Epitome of "Show; Don't Tell"
          By S. Schneider
The writing throughout RELEASE is phenomenal. It drew me right in, but not in a rushed manner. Ms. Mangan gives the characters time to develop, time for the reader to connect and become fully immersed in the whole situation and story. Of course, once that has been accomplished, the reader is then forcefully pushed down a rabbit hole of chaos along with the characters.

In a masterful display of 'show, don't tell,' RELEASE not only reads like watching a movie, but has parts and scenes that have every possibility of making the reader question his/her own sanity, scenes with such speed and chaos as to make the reader worry that they've missed something, or that they must be careful or they will something. The effectiveness of this technique is not something I've experienced whilst reading before now. These parts and scenes held so much impact that, honestly, I wasn't sure if I was wrong, the book was wrong, the character was wrong, or the whole universe had been upended! Turns out, everything was just as it should be and the only way to fully feel, read, and understand anything afterward requires being so fully immersed as to experience exactly what I felt. (After that, good luck even thinking about putting this book down!)

The ending, to me, was perfectly suiting. There was no rush to tidy up ends nor loose ends left dangling. The pace matched what I expected, matched my own feelings as I neared the final pages, and the message of it –the message that captured and summarized the whole meaning of the book, resonated so much with me that I was stunned. Yeah, I've been there, in a way, and seeing it put into words was like being smacked. Truly, it's the only way...

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading RELEASE and look forward to reading more by Amelia Mangan. This book could have gone horribly wrong, the storyline could have been a tangled mess of dead vines, but her writing really made this nothing short of, not just a wonderful read, but, a complete experience.

          A staggering, powerful debut novel
          By John L Warrender
Amelia Mangan's first full-length tale is as macabre as her brilliant short fiction, and displays a mastery of tone and atmosphere that sets her on a par with any seasoned horror writer you could name, her evocative prose conjuring imagery of such power that it feels as if the book's mood of dread and decay seeps from the page and into the reader's bones. This bleak fairy tale of lost souls and dark love, a twisted story of manipulation and madness, builds to a shocking finale that haunted me for months after. Release is not just a riveting vision of disquieting horror; it's a declaration that an essential new voice has arrived.

          Fantastic debut!
          By Shane .D Keene
Prior to RELEASE, I had never heard of Amelia Mangan, nor did I know anything very specific about this book, so I had no idea what I was getting into. Just that it was an interesting premise written by a new author. That’s a combo that hooks me every time. I love delving into the unknown and the unexpected, and what I discovered with RELEASE was unexpectedly delightful.

For a first novel, RELEASE surprised the hell out of me. It’s one of the more accomplished debut efforts I’ve seen in a long time. Mangan displays a mastery of descriptive imagery and a flare for character driven story that is unusual in a new author and something that, in this reviewer’s opinion, is crucial to a good story.

In RELEASE, Stanley Fitzgerald has recently been released from the mental hospital where he has been incarcerated for the last ten years. Against his doctor’s advice, he returns to the home of his childhood and, with the help of a distant cousin, attempts to put his life back together. But Marina, the murderous sociopath he met and befriended in the asylum, has other plans in store. One rainy night she shows up on Stanley’s doorstep, barefoot and drenched to the bone. Uninvited, she moves in and quickly takes over Stanley’s life. From this point on things get crazy and Stanley is plunged into a nightmare of manipulation, psychological torture, and despair.

With deft, lyrical prose, Amelia Mangan paints her story on the page with vivid detail, well written, flowing dialog, and outstanding character development. RELEASE is a fast moving, engrossing, and ultimately heartrending tragedy that moves along at a natural, well-managed pace. The characters are damn near perfect and Mangan’s grasp of language is top-notch, making for an epic, beautifully twisted Gothic fairy tale. If I were to recommend only one debut novel for 2015, RELEASE would be it, hands down.
