About the Author

Arthur R. Kroeber is founding partner of Gavekal Dragonomics, a China-focused economic research consultancy he established in Beijing in 2002 after 15 years as a freelance financial journalist in Asia, and editor of its flagship publication China Economic Quarterly. He is also head of research at the firm's parent company Gavekal, where he advises financial, corporate and government clients on economic and political developments in China. Kroeber is a senior non-resident fellow of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy, adjunct professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, and a member of the National Committee on US-China relations. He lives in Beijing and New York.

This is a very readable and clear explanation of the "rise of China." It is not very often that a book of non-fiction is difficult to put down, but I found myself caught up in the author's gripping account. He poses questions in each chapter that bring the story of China's rapid development to life. His answers are grounded in economic development theory, but in ways that bring out the best of this literature and how it relates to the Chinese case. There is a deluge of books on China's development and I have read quite a few of these. This one, however, is by far the best.

Not Worth Buying

Somewhere I got the impression this would be humorous, maybe b/c Bill Bryson's book on the Mother Tongue was. This wasn't. But I learned some dismaying things: 1) that if something is used incorrectly long enough, it becomes acceptable & 2) that what I took pains to learn as correct grammar & try hard to continue to use no longer matters so pretty much anything goes. Mostly this is very long lists of words in a few different categories w/ little commentary. I only glanced over the commonly misspelled ones b/c I had never seen most of those misspellings & one even had the same spelling for both correct & incorrect. I just found this to be pretty boring & not helpful at all which was a huge disappointment b/c I love words & language. I think it is pretty forgettable aside from the fact that I now have to let go of what I consider misuses of language that usually drive me nuts!

Dip in and enjoy this one

This is a solid book that should help writers enhance their writing skills and word usage. Be aware, though, that most readers will dip into it, put it aside, dip into it again, and so forth. And that isn't a criticism, just an observation. Most of the book is devoted to lists of misused/misspelled words and their proper usage/spelling. Then there is a section on new words that I found amusing. Lots of solid information here, but you won't read it in one sitting. Dip in and enjoy.

Why I Wrote This Book

Much has been written on managing the symptoms of ADD ADHD, but these books were almost always directed at the client himself, as if it was up to the person with ADD/ADHD alone to solve his problems and get on with life. Yes, there were chat groups and forums where wives could air their complaints – but very few resources that gave wives tools to take control of their situation by actively helping their husbands deal with their challenges.

This book is an attempt to do just that: to bring together in one place a host of information to help wives not only understand their husband’s condition, but also to empower them to steer their relationship in a healthier direction.

Since coming to this new understanding, I, along with my colleagues at the Sachs Center, have been able to help scores of women gain a new understanding of ADD ADHD and how they can transform their marriages from a living nightmare into a much more peaceful and harmonious state of affairs. As we wrote this book, we reached out to scores of men and women across the country to learn from their experiences. If you have picked up this book, then we both already know you need help – but you must also realize that you are not alone.

About the Author
Dr. Sachs is a licensed child and adult psychologist, specializing in the treatment of ADD ADHD in adults. He understands that relationships and marriage can be greatly impacted by ADD ADHD.

Dr. Sachs did his clinical training in Chicago at Cook County Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital and the Child Study Center. He completed his internship and post doctoral work at the Children’s Institute in Los Angeles, where he supervised and trained therapists in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT).

Dr. Sachs consulted to Juilliard in New York City, providing counseling to their dance, drama, and orchestral students. Dr. Sachs is author of Helping the Traumatized Child and "Helping Your Husband with ADHD.” Dr. Sachs has appeared on NBC Nightly News, CBS, WPIX and other major media outlets, discussing his unique holistic approach to ADD/ADHD treatment. Dr. Sachs also writes for the Huffington Post. Dr. Sachs is a member of the American Psychological Association and the New York State Psychological Association.

Such a HUGE help!

I am half way through this book and the entire thing is the exact story of my life for the last 4 years. When my husband and I met, not only did I not know anything about ADD/ADHD, but he had been diagnosed years before and never said a word to me. First, I thought his little "quirks" we're cute, then I thought he was just lazy and childish. Now I get it. Not only do I get where it a all comes from, I get that all this time he's been trying to make me believe that I was losing my mind was to keep the focus off of him. This book is steering me in a completely different direction now, thankfully.

Rather superficial and stereotypic

The author opens the book by citing ADHD prevalence figures from the Wall Street Journal. That presents the first suggestion that his expertise in this field is limited. Another suggestion comes with the continued use of "ADD/ADHD" as if there are two types of ADHD. Instead, there is only one official term, ADHD, with three presentations (Hyperactive, Combined, and Inattentive).

Throughout there are further indications that the author has a rather superficial and stereotypical understanding of ADHD. It is unclear why the holder of a PsyD who claims a "gestalt" clinical approach considers himself expert enough to write such a book.

This book's simplistic concepts and language might be useful to people who are just getting started in learning about ADHD in adults and prefer simple reading material. But they should be aware that this topic is much more complex.

About the Author
Jordan Sarah Weatherhead comes from just about the smallest town anyone can imagine. Raised in Leonard, North Dakota until the age of 18, Weatherhead always had an imagination that ran right out of her head and onto paper. Always drifting off in school classes to worlds of magic and monsters, sunshine and adventure, she often got in trouble for being the girl who never put the pen down and never kept her head up. While on a vacation in Hawaii with her best friend at the age of 16, Weatherhead found something she hadn't before believed in; love. One trip to paradise and her world had changed forever. Now instead of just daydreaming about adventures, she was about to embark on one. Writing went from being a distracting hobby to a necessity for letting out her teenage angst and long distance love that no one around her thought would last. Being published in a book of poetry at age 18 lit the fire for Weatherhead even more. Jordan moved to Detroit, Michigan after high school graduation to be with her soul mate from Hawaii, Chad. From the moment that the summer after her high school graduation began, she knew there were two things in life she wanted: A life with Chad and to be a writer. Moving around from Michigan, Florida, and North Dakota and back to Michigan, Jordan and Chad had a son, got married, survived his deployment to Iraq, and encountered many more of life's experiences along the way. Weatherhead never once stopped writing and through the ups and downs in life she relentlessly put down onto paper the rawest feelings of her adventures. Never feeling completely understood in her life, Weatherhead now puts out this amazing book of emotions for the world to read. Jordan Weatherhead is a strong and outspoken individual with a 'never-back-down, in-your-face' attitude. Her family, friends, and life lessons are all reasons this book is possible, but the major driving force behind her words will always be Chad. Jordan now resides in Detroit, Michigan with her husband and son where she enjoys poker, live music, traveling, basketball, tattoos, being with friends, and staying in touch with her family back home. She plans on putting out other books in the years to come and to keep her dream alive of a life with Chad and being a writer. Weatherhead believes passion and love are the biggest forces in this world, and if you have those two things, you can achieve miracles.

Great for forms, not so much for reports

This is a solid reference book for those doing primarily Forms development, but it lacks quite a little in the Reports department. If you're buying it for Reports development, as I did, you'll be disappointed. I have yet to find a very good Reports reference. That said, this is probably the best one out there. The book contains something like 70% - 30% Forms info to Reports info (and that may be a little generous). It does have a few good examples and is an easy read.

READ THIS BOOK. You may understand what subclassing means and how object libraries work, but you'll have a hard time being productive if you don't understand how they best work together.
Wish I had this book before beginning my latest project. It has changed the way I look at Forms and Reports development.

Finally, a developer book worth having on my bookshelf

There are plenty of beginner books on the market, and some are actually helpful. There was one question that was never answered though -- "OK, I can build a block. Now what? " Peter and Paul have answered this question perfectly. So well in fact that the 1 copy I bought for the office is not enough. This book has become mandatory for my employees to have in their library.
Top this off with the interview questions they provide for managers and this book is the most well rounded book to date. If you, or any of your people, are using Developer for your projects, this book is a must.

About the Author
Chuck Williams is Dean of the College of Business at Butler University. Dr. Williams previously served as Dean of the Eberhardt School of Business at the University of the Pacific and as Associate Professor of Management at the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. Dr. Williams has also served as Associate Dean and Chair of Management and has taught at Michigan State University and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Williams received his B.A. in psychology from Valparaiso University. He specialized in organizational behavior, human resources, and strategic management while earning his M.B.A and Ph.D. in business administration from Michigan State University. His research interests include employee recruitment and turnover, performance appraisal, and employee training and goal setting. Dr. Williams has published research in the JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT REVIEW, PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY, and the ORGANIZATIONAL RESEARCH METHODS JOURNAL. Something an Adult can Love as Much as the Kids.

If I can say nothing else about Rick Riordan (RR) I will say he is without a doubt an entertaining storyteller no matter what age you are. While his Percy Jackson series are still my favorites I enjoyed this book more than The Red Pyramid.

The best thing about this book is that there are more kids. It just makes for a little more humor when you have kids interacting with other kids instead of adults. Now that Sadie and Carter are helping to train some new kids at Brooklyn house there is rooms for some new and interesting characters.

-- “Felix believed that the answer to every problem involved penguins; but it wasn't fair to birds, and I was getting tired of teleporting them back home. Somewhere in Antarctica, a whole flock of Magellanic penguins were undergoing psychotherapy.”

Carter and Sadie need to find a way to awaken Ra if they are going to beat Apophis (god of Chaos) but he has been missing for quite awhile and they will need to find some ancient artifacts to help them.

RR adds his own spin on Egyptian mythology and ‘The Gods’ that is entertaining, informative and interesting. I always feel like I’m learning about the culture as well as being entertained by the story. There were all kinds of new gods and obstacles to deal with along the way and Sadie and Carter have to prove even to the gods that want Ra to return they are strong enough to complete the task.

I love the sibling relationship between Cater and Sadie. They antagonize and provoke each other but they are also the firt to stand up and fight for their sibling if they are ever in danger. Sadie’s PoV chapters were my favorites but that is probably because she is so snarky and gets to have most of the funny lines.

- “Our camels plodded along. Katrina tried to kiss, or possibly spit on Hindenburg, and Hindenburg farted in response. I found this a depressing commentary on boy-girl relationships.”

Carter still feels responsible for Zia and has been trying to find her ever since he found out she was hidden away for her safety. But he might just be a little obsessed, so much so that he is seeing clues everywhere.

- “Carter, not to be unkind," I said, "but the last few months you've been seeing messages about Zia everywhere. Two weeks ago, you thought she was sending you a distress call in your mashed potatoes."
"It was a Z! Carved right in the potatoes!”

There is always something happening with all the mini quests before the big one and I will say that Ra really wasn’t what I was expecting, which kinda made it all the better. Who said waking up a god would be easy never went looking for one with and evil Ice Cream vendor hot on their trail.

Add in the hint of a blossoming romance between Sadie and Walt or Sadie and Anubus and this story has a little bit of everything. It is the cutest crush triangle I’ve read and I’m not sure which way I want it to go. All in all a fun and entertaining ride. Sure this is a MG book but it is just as fun for kids of all ages.

If you haven’t read the Percy Jackson series I’d say read that first (so much better than the movies). But if you have might as well expand your RR mythology and add a little Egyptian to it.

History and entertainment...for kids!

This book is history masquerading as a fun, fast-paced story. My kids loved this book because the story was fun and exciting, but the author mixed in so much Egyptian history and mythology that my kids really learned something. It's certainly not a textbook, but it made the topic fun and has inspired my kids to learn more about Ancient Egypt.

A good book for any age

I really like Rick Riordan's books, starting with Percy Jackson series. I like that he uses mythology and humour in his books. I have always loved mythology and this is a great series to get my sons reading. In fact, it was my oldest son and my sister who got me into Riordan's books.

This is the second book of the Kane's Series/Egyptian Mythology. This is written in first person from each sibling's point of view (POV). Each chapter is a different POV. Some writers have a hard time writing different voices for their characters and when they try this the characters sound the same. However, Riordan does a good job of keeping Sadie and Carter's voice distinct.

I bought this one to replace the one that disappeared. It has been awhile since I read the Kane Series.
